Be it known that I, GEORGE GIOVANNA, a
' subject of the King of Italy, who have de- .clared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residin at the city of New York, borough of Ma attan, county and State of New York. have invented certain new and useful Illuminated Ornamental Effects, of which the following is aspecification. r
This invention pertains to means for securing a certain decorative or ornamental elevation, taken centrally through the foreffect in connection with various sources of illumination, such as the headlights now commonly used on motor vehicles, portable electric lamps, and flashlights.
' In this art a demand-has arisen for means for displaying the patriotic sentiments of the public, and while many schemes have been proposed, no one to my knowledge has 7 suggested or devised a means expressive of such sentiments in connection with sources I of illumination of the character heretofore The object of this invention is to afford simple, efficient and economical means for obtaining 'a decorative and ornamental effect, the same being capable of use in connection with existing illuminating devices without (altering the character thereof and of being applied easily thereto.
For the headlights of an automobile or other vehicle, the invention is in the form of a flat annular plate provided with the desired embellishment, said annular plate being applied into contact with thelens or lass of said headlight and being retained .1n position by the means employed for clamping said lens or glass. The embellishment of the annular plate is effected by perforating it with an appropriate design, such as by the use of star-shaped openings and by the use of different colors applied over saidopenings or to the glass so that the light shining through the colored openings will impart an ornamental and attractive effect to the headlight, all of which is obtained economically and without modifying the structure of the headli ht or interfering with the illumination a%orded thereby.
In a similar manner and by similar means, a decorative effect is obtained in connection with portable electric lamps or flash lights, in which cases the perforated Specification of Letterslatent.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawin s, 10 designates an annular plate compose of suitable opaque ma,- terial, such as metal or paper. Said plate is in the form of a flat ring having a central opening 11 and in the material composing the plate is provided a desired number of openings 12. Said openings may be of any suitable form according to the embellishment to be imparted to the devices, but as shown, each opening is star-shaped, there being a circular row of star-shaped openings provided in the plate 10 and around thecentral opening 11 therein. The external diameter of the plate 10 is equal substantially to the diameter of a lens or glass-b of a headlight suitable kind of headlight, hence it is not necessary'to illustrate or describe said head in order that said plate10' may be readily applied to the headlight and that the-collar a may be utilized 'in confining the perforated: plate in operative position with respect to the lens 6 of the headlight.
Provision is made for the display of various colors through the openings 12 in the annular plate, as for example the stars. display red, white and blue colors. As shown,

Having thus fully described the invention,
what I claim as new and desire to Letters Patent is I- 1. In a device of the class described, the
secure by combination with a lens positioned to inter cept the light rays from. a suitable source, and clamping means for said lens, of a plate composed of opaque material positioned in contact With the surface ofysaid lens and retained in operative relation thereto by said clamping means, said plate being provided with an unobstructed substantially central opening and with a plurality of other openings, and translucent light-modifying media positioned to cover said other openings in the plate.

3; In a device of the class described, the combination with a lens of a headlight or flashlight, and clamping means therefor, of
a platecomposed of opaque material, said plate being positioned in contact-with said lens andretained in operative relation thereto by said clamping means, said plate being provided with a normally unobstructed central opening and with a plurality of other openings of smaller size than the central opening, and light-modifying translucent material covering said smaller openings.
