LAMP SHADE.
Application filed October 30, 1920. Serial No. 420,772.
To all whom it may concern: V
Be it known that I, Gnonon H. SMITH, a citizen of Canada, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Shades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp shades.
More particularly the invention relates to shades to be used in connection with incandescent lamps.
Some of the objects of the present invention are: to produce a knock-down or collapsible lamp shade which is very simple ofconstruction, inexpensive, and which gives the desired effects in that it may be made attractive and ornamental in spite of its being inex ensive; to produce a combination of parts 1w ich may be readil assembled to form shades for upright or top lamps, or lamps set at an angle; to produce a lamp shade, the shade proper of which is maintained in the desired shape by the weight of rings or similar members, or by a filler frame, the latter being used when a shade is to be used in connection with an upright lam With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular provision, combination and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a collective view of the several parts of the lamp of the present invention. Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the parts of the lamp shade assembled.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3, Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view showing a modified form of the detail of the invention shown in Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be manifest that, the lamp shade in the preferred embodiment of the invention, is shown as a plied to a drop lam -see I Figure 2. On re erence to Figure 1, it will be seen that the shade of the present invention will include a holder member 10, a shade proper or lamp encircling member 12, a filler frame 11, and rings 13.
The holder member 10 which may be made of any suitable material, but which is preferably made of sheet metal, comprises an annular part 14 having arranged concentrically with relation thereto an encircling band 15. The band 15 is divided and the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an, 24, 1922, I
out-turned ends thereof carry a screw 16 for effecting the attachment of the holder member to a part of the lamp: The band 15 embodies a recess or groove 17, the purpose of which will appear.
' The shade proper 12, which may be made of any translucent material, consists of a single piece sewn as at 18at the top and bottom thereof to provide hems 19 and 20, which are open ended as at 21 fora purpose to appear. The piece is sewn as at 22 in the completion of the shade proper.
One of the rings13 is inserted in the lower hem 20 through one of the open ends thereof. Another ring 13 having the desired degree of flexibility is inserted in the upper hem 19 through one of the open ends thereof, after the filler frame 11 has been placed within the shade proper. The shade proper 12 which it-is to be understood will include the translucent material, the filler frame, and the rings, will be supported or suspended from the holder member 10 by the engagement of the u per ring 13 in the recess or groove 17. of the said ring the same may be sprung into place in said groove.
It is to be understood that the part 14 of the holder 10 may be of any desired shape or configuration, and likewise, the rings 13 may be of any desired shape to hold the translucent material in a desired shape. The filler frame 11 may be dispensed with when the shade proper is to be of a design of straight lines, especially if a stiff paper is used.
When light material is used the lower ring is to be heavier to maintain the proper'shape. In cases where the filler frame is used, such as for instances for shades for upright lamps or lamps set at anangle, the filler frame may be made of any suitable light material, such as glass, or wire. The filler frame may also be of an desired shape. The filler frame is capab e of holding the translucent material sha ed by using at least one ring that is smal er than the adjacent end part of the frame.
The ring used for effecting the attachment of the shade proper to the holder member may have inturned portions 25, and the part 14 of the holder member may have apertures 26 for the reception of the portions 25, as shown'in Figure 4.
What is claimed is:
1. A knock-down lam shade comprising an attaching holder mem er having a groove wing to the flexibility menses proper comprising a piece of flexible trans- 15 lucent material having open ended hems, a frame comprising ring-members and connecting-members for holding the ring-members in spaced relation for holding said ma terial in a rescribed iorm; and split-rings insertable into and removable from said hems, one of said split-rings being flexible whereby to effect the attachment of said lampshade-proper to said holder member When engaged in said groove.
In testimony whereof I hereby aiiix my signature.
