'Lamp-Shades, of which the followingis a specification.

'Ihis invention relates to an improvement in lamp shades, yand more .particularly to shades for electric lamps.

The obj ect of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap lamp shade which, while presenting a pleasing appearance and which may be changed quickly to varythe color-of the light radiated therefrom.

Another object isv to provide a device of this character which, when removed from the lamp and not in use may be collapsed into a very small space to facilitate its storage and transportation and which, when ap plied will open up readily into the position desired for use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated, the shade constituting this invention comprises a pair of semi-circular members l and Y2, preferably constructed ofy cardboard or cellu loid strips, although obviously they may be composed of aluminum or other material if found desirable. The ends of these strips are hingedly connected as shown at 3, flexible strips of muslin or the like being preferably used for the hinges, which, while cheap in construction, is effective in operation and will last for a considerable time.

These Asemi-circular strips or members l and 2 have secured thereto a collapsible shade member 4 composed of paper or snn1- lar material of any suitable or desired color,

which is crimped as shown at 5 to be folded' into a small space when collapsed as shown in Fig. 4, and which will open up into the forml shown in Figs. l and 2, presenting when so opened, avery pleasing appearance, a uniform configuration being imparted to the folds so that substantially diamond shaped figures are produced when the shade is in open operative position.

`Attaching:clips 6 are carried by each of 'the members l `and 2 and are here shown composed of fine wire strips, each folded intermediately of vits ends and bent laterally toform a U-shaped clamping member 7, the' arms 8V extending inwardly between each of the supporting1 members l or 2 and the shade proper 5, said arms being slidably mounted so that the clips may be adjusted to lit lam-p shades S of varying diameters. As shown, these arms 8 are brought together at their inner ends and twisted as shown at 9 so that all danger of the clips slipping out and becoming lost is avoided.

As shown in the accompanying drawings, securing bands 10 are used for attaching the members l and 2 midway their ends to the shade 4 and also for connecting arcuate reinforcing sections 1l to said members. 'The v sections 1l extend partially aroundy the mem-y bers 1 and 2 as is shown clearly in Fig. 4 and the legs of the clips 6 are slidably mounted between these sections l1 and the members by which they are carried.

In the use of this improved shade, the members 1 and 2 are opened outwardly in opposite directions into the position shown in Figs. l and 2 and the hooked portions 7 of the clips 6 are engaged around the edges of a lamp shade S at diametricall opposite fpoints thereby connecting the etachable shade 4 to the shade S which is usually of opaque lass and is commonly used for electric lig ts. By making the members or eov clips 6 extensible obviously, the shade 4 may be attached to a porcelain shade or other support of varying diameters.

When it isdesired to remove shade 4, one of the clips 6 is slid outwardly to disengage its hook` 7 from the shade S and the shade 4 may then be removed and folded into the position shown in Fig. 4 so that it will occupy a minimum amount of space when stored..

Y hing'edly By so constructing` these shades, any desired number may be kept in stock and of varied colors so that when desired a red, green, blue, or other color may be used at the Will of the ovvner, and when not in use, may, be collapsed and placed in a small space out of the Way. Y

F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and While I have ,described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which YI nonT consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that4 such changes may be made as are Wit-hin the scope of the claimed invention.

I claim zl. A shade of the class described comprising a pair of semi-eircular frame sections,

connected at their ends, a collapsible shade secured to said sections, and means ordetachably Vconnecting said sections intermediately of their ends to a supporting structure. Y

A lamp shade comprising` a pair of semi-circular trame sections hingedly connected at their ends, a semispherical shade connected with said sections and foldable to conform to the shape oi said sections when collapsed, and means for adjustably and detachably connecting said frame sections to a support.

A lamp shade comprising a pair of semi-circular frame sections hingedly connected at their ends, and reinforcing super posed arcuate strips carried by said sections and secured thereto, a shade semispherical in shape when opened, and collapsible to conform to the shape of the sections when closed, and adjustably connected elements slidably mounted between the frame sections and their reinforcing members.
