FRAME FOR ADVERTISEMENTS AND TRANSPARENCIES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,737, dated September 13, 1887. Application filed September 30. 1886. Serial No. 214,903. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANK B. RAY, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Frames for Advertisements and Transparencies, of which the following is afull description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view; Fig. 2, a side elevation, with the side broken out; Fig. 3, a perspective view showing the device folded up; Fig. 4., a detail showing a modification in attaching the lamp; Fig. 5, a modification showing a solid base or support for the arms.

My invention relates to folding frames of transparencies for advertising and other purposes; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed,

In the drawings, A represents the base 01 support, formed of sheet metal or other suitable material, in the shape of a tube or socket, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, so as to receive a candle or other illuminating device. This base or support at its upper end in the form of construction shown in said figures has a head, a, and a projecting flange, a, to form between them a space, a, for the attachment of the folding arms.

B is the folding arms, each formed of wire' or other suitable material that can be bent to have a lower portion, 6, an upper portion, b, and a connecting portion, 1)", and the portion 1) at its end is provided with a loop or opening, b", to encircle the upper end of the base or support A, and at the end of the portion b is a loop or opening, I), through which a pin or bolt, b can be passed to connect the several arms together, as shown in Fig. 2. The arms shown are made of wire, and at the juncture of the parts b b with the part b a loop, I), is formed; but such loops are not essential, but are convenient for attaching the material which forms the sides.

0 represents the sides, made of cloth or other suitable material, adapted for the dis play of advertisements or other matter. This material is attached to the arms B, at the outer ends, by stitching passed through the loops 1), or by tying the same to the arms by loops 0 of thread or other material, passing adjacent to the loops b, or otherwise, and in order to provide for folding the device one of the arms B is to be left unattached to the material C, so that this arm can be folded, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, loosening the material, and allowing the other arms to be folded together, as shown in Fig. 3.

D is a stick or staff receiving the base or support A.

E is a lamp, which may have a socket, e, therein to receive a pin in the end of the stick D, or the bottom of the lamp can have a plug attached thereto to enter the end of the base A. The base A can have an interior diameter of a size to receive the candle; or the candle can be placed in a secondary socket adapted to enter the base or support As shown, four arms B are provided, which form, when extended, a rectangular transparency; but three arms can be used to form a triangular transparency, or a number of arms to form a transparency of more than four sides can be used, the arms being connect-ed so that they can be folded, as shown in Fig. 3, for storage when not in use.

In use the loose arm B is extended to stretch out the material partially, and the extension of the material is completed by swinging the other arms B into the required position to stretch the material 0 into shape, and when stretched a candle, lamp, or other illuminating device can be inserted into or connectedlwith the base or support A to produce the required illumination for display purposes. The de vice, when not in use, will occupy but a small space, as the arms B can be folded together, as shown in Fig. 3, and the material Owound around them, as shown, or be. left loose.

Instead of making the hollow, it can be formed solid, as shown in Fig. 5, in which case a socket for the candle or lamp fits onto one end and the other end enters a socket on the end of the stick D, as shown in Fig. .5.

What I claim as new, Letters Patent, is-
