` 1,588,490 R.MURRAY PIVOT WINDOW CLOSUR DEVIC'E Filed OCT.. 19. 1923 Juge 15 1926.
Patented June 15, 1926.
UNITED STATES RICHARD MURRAY, QF NEW YORK` N. Y.
:PIVOT-WINDOW CLOSURE DEVICE.
Application iled'etober 19, 1923. Serial No. 669,493.
This invention relates to 'pivot windows l and particularly to a closure device vfor such windows, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified which is so constructed as to lock the window in diiferent positions of adjustment, the latch element of said device being manually moved into an inoperative position and automatically moved into an operative position; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a latch device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and eflicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are vdesignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is an inside view of a window construction showing my improved latch device mounted in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 ofA Fig. l. l
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with parts of the construction broken away. i
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing only a detail of the construction and with parts removed; and,
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawing, I have shown at 10 a window frame in which is mounted a pivot 'window sash 11, said sash being pivoted at the top and bottom of the window frame on pivots 12 and 13 to permit of the longitudinal swinging of the window sash in said frame.
The pivot 13 at the bottom of the window sash, in the construction shown, constitutes a part of my improved latch device 14, for retaining the sash 11 in different positions of adjustment. The latch device 14 comprises a bottom plate 15 provided with a pivot pin 16 which constitutes part of the pivot'13 for the sash 11, and said plate is secured to the top face of the sill portion 17 of the frame 10 and said plate is provided with a plurality of spaced apertures 18 radially arranged with reference to the pivot pin 16. Mounted in connection with the bottom rail of the window sash is a box-shaped casing 19 having a removable front plateV 20 and mounted in the casing 19 is a latch rod 21, the upper and outer' end of which is bent at right an-l gles tor'form a handle member 22, andthe lower end 23 of which is adapted to operate in connection with the apertures 18 in the plate 15 as clearly shown in F ig. 5 of the drawing. 'Y
ecured to the rod 21 within the casing 19 is a radially extending finger member 24 adapted to operate in connection with cam faces 25 formed within the casing 19. The cam faces 25 extend upwardly and laterally attheopposite sides of the radial linger 24 when in its normal or .locked position as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing.-
The operation of my improved latch device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement. In the position of the latch device shown in the accompanying drawing, the window sash 11 is in a closed or locked position, and if it be desirable to open the sash partially or fully, the handle portion 22 of the rod 21 is grasped by hand and the rod rotated, in which operation the linger 24 travels upwardly on one of the cam faces 25, and the end portion 23 of said rod is released from one of the apertures 18, and while holding the rod 21 in this position, the window sash is swung open and may be locked in the desired position by simply releasing the rod 21 which by reason of its total weight will drop by gravity, and the end portion 23 will find and enter the nearest aperture to lock the window in the predetermined or desired position. i
It will be understood that any number of apertures 18 may be employed, and while I have shown the window sash as swinging in one direction only, the usual stops in the window frame construction may be eliminated and the window sash'may be swung in both directions, and while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invent-ion into effect, it will be understood that I am not necessarily limited to these details and various changes therein and modilications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :-V Y
