(Cl. .i6-163) This invention relates to a hinge such as a hinge for connecting a door to a cabinet or the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a hinge which can be readily and quickly installed, and wherein the hinge is constructed so that it will not detract from the appearance of the cabinet or other structure on which it is installed or being used, and Wherein the hinge mechanism will be hidden from view when mounted in place, the hinge being easy to keep clean and having a smooth and easy operation.
A further object is to provide a hinge for a cabinet door or the like wherein there is provided a means for helping to retain or maintain the door in a desired position such as in a closed or fully opened or partially opened position, and wherein there is provided a spring means which helps urge or bias the door into the desired position or direction.
Another object is to provide an apparatus or a device of the character described that may be utilized speedily and with precision by even inexperienced operators.
Further objects and advantages are to provide improved elements and arrangements thereof in a device of the character described that is economical to produce, durable in form, and conducive to the most economical use of materials and uniformity of members formed therefrom.
Still further objects and advantages will become apparent in the subsequent description in the specification.

Referring in detail to the drawings and more particularly to FIGURES l through 7 of the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a portion of a supporting structure or cabinet which may include wall members 11 as well as wall pieces :12 which may be arranged at right angles with respect to the Wall members 11 so that the pieces 12 can define or provide Stiles. A brace 13 may be arranged between a pair of stiles 12 so as to define doorways or spaces 14, and cushioning members `1S are adapted to be suitably fastened to the brace 13 in order to function as shock absorbers or bumpers for the doors such as the doors 16.
According to the present invention there is provided a hinge mechanism, which is indicated generally by the numeral 17, and it is to be understood that one or more of the hinges 17 can be used on the doors as desired or required. The door 16 may be provided with surfaces such as the surfaces 18 and 19 whereby there is defined a recess 20 in an edge thereof, and the door may be provided with a generally tapered portion 21, as for example as shown in FIGURE 2.
3,965,349 Patented Dec. 4, 1962 The hinge 17 of the present invention comprises a support member which is indicated generally by the numeral 22, and the support member 22 includes tirst and second portions 23 and 24 that are arranged at right angles with respect to each other, FIGURES l and 5. The numerals 25 and 26 indicate securing elements such as screws which are adapted to be extended through apertures or openings such as the openings 27 and 28 in order to fasten the support member 22 to a wall piece or stile `12 as shown in the drawings. The irst portion 23 is arranged contiguous to an inner edge portion of the wall or still 12. The second portion 24 is contiguous to the inner surface of the wall piece 12, and the second portion 24 is provided on an end or edge thereof with a pair of spaced apart curved sections 29 for a purpose to be later described.
The numeral 30 indicates a body member that includes a generally iiat first section 31 and an integral arcuate second section 32, and a pair of rolled sections 33 are arranged on an end of the section 31, FIGURE 5, and these rolled sections 33 are spaced from each other so as to define or provide a slot 34 therebetween. The rolled sections 33 are aligned with and interposed between the curved sections 29 when the parts are in their proper assembled position. rIhe numeral 35 indicates a hinge pin or pivot pin which extends through the aligned curved sections 29 and rolled sections 33 in order to provide a pivotal connection between the body member 3G and support member 22.
The numeral 36 indicates a spring member which is circumposed on the pin 35, and portions of the spring member 36 engage the slot 34, and as shown in FIGURE 5 for example, the spring member 36 includes a iiat portion 37 which bears against the portion. 24 of the support member 22, and the spring memberI 36 further includes coiled portions 38 which terminate in straight portions 39, and the straight portions 39 engage or bear against the section 31 of the body member 3i), as for example as shown in FIGURE l.
The section 32 of the body member 3G is provided with an aperture or opening 4t), and the numeral 41, indicates a pin which embodies a cylindrical stem 42 that is slidably arranged in the aperture liti, and the pin. 41 further includes on one end thereof an enlarged head 43, and there is provided on the other end of the pin t1 a reduced diameter shank 44 which is adapted to engage an aperture or opening 46 in a latch plate 49, FIGURE 7, and the pin 41 is adapted to be riveted into the opening 46. The numeral 45 indicates a coil spring which is circumposed on the pin 41, and the coil spring 45 abuts the head 43. The latch plate 49 is arranged contiguous to the section 32 of the body member 3?, and formed integral with or secured to an end of the latch plate 49 are shoulders 47 and 48 which are arranged at right angles with respect to each other, FIGURE 7.
The hinge of the present invention further includes or embodies a base piece which is indicated generally by the numeral 5u, and the base piece Sti includes an end section 51 and a flat section 55 which is arranged at right angles with respect to the end section 51, and the end section 51 is provided with spaced apart curved elements 52 for receiving therebetween a rolled piece 53 on an end of the body member 30. The numeral 54 indicates a hinge pin which is adapted to be extended through the registering curved elements 52 and rolled piece 53 whereby the body member 30 is pivotally connected to the base piece 59. The iiat section 5S of the base piece 50 is arranged contiguous to and secured to the inner surface of the door 16, as for example by means of screws 57 which extend through openings 56 in the at section 55.
The numeral 5S indicates the bracket which is secured to or formed integral with the section 55 of the base piece 50, and a roller 59 is journaled in the bracket 5S by means of a pin 6i). The numeral 61 indicates a spring element which has an end portion thereof secured to the body member 30 as at 62, and the free end of the spring element 61 is provided with a shouldered section 63, for selectively engaging and coacting with the roller 59.
The numeral 64 indicates a shield or cover which is adapted to be made of a single piece oi material that is shaped to include spaced parallel side `walls 65 that are interconnected or joined by an end wall 66, and arranged at right angles with respect to the side Walls 65 are ears or lugs 67 which are provided with apertures or openings 6d whereby the screws or securing elements 2,6 can be extended through such openings 68 in order to retain the shield 64 in its proper position.
Referring to FlGURE 8 of the drawings there is ila lustrated a modication or alternative construction wherein the numeral 16' indicates a door that has an edge 69that is adapted to be arranged in overlapping relation with respect to a portion of the stile or wall 12 when the door `16 is closed, whereas in FGURES l through 7 the door 16 is adapted to be arranged ilush with the stile 12 when the door is closed as or example shown in F-lGURE l. Otherwise the construction of the hinge of the present invention is generally the same as previously described.
:From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a hinge which will be hidden when in use, and which will have a novel and sutlicient action to accomplish the desired results. With the parts arranged as shown in the drawings, it will be seen that when the door such as the door 16 is fully closed as in FlGURE l the parts of the hinge 17 are in the position shown in FlGURE l, and the door can be moved to a partially opened position as shown in FlGURE 2, or the door can be moved to a fully opened position as shown in FlGURE 3. The door 16 may be of the type which is flush with the stile i12. when the door is closed as shown in `EGURE l, or else the hinge 17 can be used with a door such as the door 16 of FGURE 8 and the door 116 may have an end portion 69 which overlaps a portion of the stile 12 when the door 16 is closed.
While the cabinet structure 14B has been illustrated and described as having a pair of doors 16, one door 16 being mounted for movement into and out of opened or closed relation with respect to each doorway or opening 14, it is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to any particular number of doors, and in addition it is not limited to any particular cabinet structure since the present invention is adapted to be used with doors or cabinets of diterent sizes, shapes or the like. When a cabinet such as the cabinet 1d has the door hinges of the present invention mounted thereon as shown in the drawings, the brace 13 may have the cushioning members 15 suitably connected thereto whereby closing of the doors will be cushioned in the usual manner. The door may be provided with one or more knobs or handles 7i) for facilitating the manual opening or closing of the door.
The parts can be made of any suitable material and in different shapes or sizes.
It will be seen that the support member 22 is fastened to a stile 12, and in FIGURE 1` a part of two doors 16 is illustrated, and it is to be understood that hinges 1,7 are to be used in connection with both of the doors although only one hinge '17 is illustrated. With the support member 22 fastened to the Stiles 12, the body member 3d is adapted to be pivotally connected as at 35 to the support member 22, and the pin 41 has a slidable fit in the opening 49 of the body member 3d whereby the pin 41 provides a fulcrum for the latch plate 49. That is, with the parts arranged as shown in FIGURES 2 and 3 forexample, when the door 16 is being closed, the pori tion of the base piece Sit will engage the shoulder 48 to thereby rock or pivot the latch plate 49 about the pin 41 so as to permit the edgel 71 of the latch plate 49 to move clear of the edge 72 of the support member 22 whereby there will be yno interference with return movement of the latch plate 49 and associated parts as for example from a position such as that shown in FIG- URES 2 and 3 to a position such as that shown in FIG- URES 1 and 8.
The shield 64 is fastened in place contiguous to the support member 22 by means of the same screws 26` which fasten the support member 22 to the corresponding adjacent stiles 12. This shield 64 is shaped so that there will be no interference with normal movement or use of the various parts of the hinge.
The base piece 5d is secured tothe door 16 or 16 as shown in the drawings, and the door such as the door 16 is adapted to be recessed as at 20 so as to provide suiiicient clearance for the parts such as the curved elements 52 and pin 54.
The pin 41 has its end portion 44 riveted and arranged in engagement with the aperture 46, and the portions 4Z of the pin 411 is adapted to slidably engage the opening 4d of the body member 3i), and the coil spring 45 has a tendency to bias the pin 41 from left to right, as for example as shown in FGURE 1, and this construction permits the pin 41 to function as a fulcrum for the latch plate 49 as previously stated so that the latch plate 49, when in the position of FIGURE 2 or FXGURE 3 can help retain the door partially or fully opened. However, when sufficient manual pressure is applied to the door to close the door, the latch plate 49 can rock or pivot on the pin 41 to separate the edge 71 from the edge 72 in order to permit the latch to be released whereby the door can be closed.
The lock including the latch plate 49 permits the hinge to operate with or without the spring 36. HG- URES 1 through 7 illustrate a ilush cabinet type of door arrangement, while FEGURE 8 illustrates a lip cabinet door arrangement. As shown in FlGURE 2., when hand pressure of a suiicient amount is applied to the door knob or the like, the door can be moved open to a position such as the position of ninety degrees relative to the front or other part of the cabinet. By means of a slight push on the door, the door can be closed, and the spring 61 can be used with or Without the spring 36.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of` details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
What is claimed is:
A hinge for a door of the type that is movably connected to a stile of a cabinet, said hinge comprising a support member which includes first and second portions that are arranged at right angles with respect to each other, said tirst portion being arranged contiguous to and afiixed to an end of the stile, said second portion being arranged contiguous to and axed to the inner surface of the stile, a pair of spaced apart curved sections integral.
with an end of said second portion; a body member in cluding a first section and an integral arcuate second` section, a pair of rolled sections on an end of said body member, and said pair of rolled sections having a slot therebetween, and said rolled sections being aligned with and interposed between said curved sections, a pin extending through said curved sections and rolled sections, a spring member including a ilat portion bearing against the second portion of said support member and said spring member further including coiled portions that are circumposed on said pin and engage said slot and said spring member further including straight por-l tions which engage the rst section of said body member, there being an aperture in the second section of said body member, a pin including a cylindrical stem slidably projecting through said aperture and said pin further' including an enlarged head on oneend and aA reduced,
diameter shank on the other end, a coil spring circumposed on said last named pin and abutting the head thereof, a latch plate arranged contiguous to said body member and said latch plate having an opening for receiving the shank of said last named pin, said plate further including shoulders that are arranged at right angles With respect to each other, a base piece including a .dat section secured to the inner surface of the door, and said base piece further including an end section having spaced apart curved elements thereon, a rolled piece on an end of said body member interposed between said curved elements, a pin extending through said curved elements and rolled piece, a bracket afxed to said base piece, a roller jourhaled in said bracket, a spring element having an end portion thereof secured to said body member, and
