Description

A. W; ASPIN DOOR HINGE Jan. 17, H950 2,494,682
Filed sept. 28, 1945 l; v n BY /6 i 5 mw ff Patented `an. 17, 195@ Arthur W. Aspin, Butler, Pa., assignor to American Bantam Car Company, Butler, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania I l Application September 28, 1945, Serial No. 619,159
This invention relates to door hinges and more particularly to a hinge for mounting a door at the rear end of a van body to swing laterally from itsA closed position to a position alongside the van body. I of the 'link between the knuckles 20 is provided The invention has for its object to provide a with a concave arcuate base ,2| that conformsA hinge for a door that will cause the door to have to and closely overlies an arcuate exterior surface an opening movement in which it swings through 22 on a knuckle 23 carried by a door plate 24. The a predetermined angle about one axis and then knuckle 23 projects from the plate 24 and fits in the same direction about an axis parallel with 1,0- between the knuckles of the link, the door but spaced from the first, and a closing movement plate being connected to the link by a vertical that is the reverse of the opening movement. pivot pin extending through the knuckles 20 With the above and other objects in view, the and 23concentrically with the arcuate surfaces invention may be said to comprise the hinge as 2I and 22. n illustrated in the yaccompanying drawings, here- 15A VThe' door plate 24 is attached to the door II inafter described and particularly set forth in 't by suitable means such as screws 26 and projects the appended claims, together with such varialaterally' beyond' the edgev of the door II for entions and modifications thereof as will be appargagement with the outer end'of the link I8. The ent to one skilled in the art to which the invenarcuate surface 22 of the knuckle 23 is provided tion pertains. 2,0; adjacent the outer end thereof with a conical Reference should be had to the accompanying recess 2 that is adapted to register with a longidrawings forming a part of this specification, in tudinal bore28 formed in the link I8 and exwhich: tending from the concave end portion 2I of the Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the link to the transverse bore I9. Inwardly of the rear end of a van body showing the wall brackets 25, recess 2l the knuckle 23 is provided with a shoulmounted upon the rear corner of the van body; der v2li that engages with a shoulder 30 on the link Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear elevation showing I8 to limit pivotal movement of the plate 24 in the door and hinge members connecting the same one direction with respect tothe link I8. When to the wall bracket; the shoulders 29 and 30 are in engagement the Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line indicated 30, recess 2l is registered with the longitudinal borev at 3-3 in Fig. 1, showing the door in closed posi- 2B of the link, which is movable from the door tion; closing position shown in Fig. 3 to the position Fig. 4 is a section similar to that shown in shown in Fig. 4 where the bore 23 registers with Fig. 3 showing the door in full open position the recess Il of the pintle I5. A latch pin 3l alongside the van body, and is slidably mounted in the bore 28 and has coni- Fig. 5 is a plan view of the hinge on an encal ends 32 and 33 forming latch elements that are larged scale. adapted to t in the recesses 21 and I1.
In the accompanying drawings the invention When the door Il is in closed position as shown is shown applied to a van type vehicle body I0 in Fig. 3, the shoulders 29 and 33 are in engagefor mounting a door II that closes an opening in ment and the door plate 24 is locked to the link IB the rear end of the van body. A wall bracket by engagement of the conical end 32 of the pin I2 is formed with a curved base to fit a rear 3l with the recess 21 in the knuckle 23. The corner of the van body and is attached to the rear length of the pin 3I is such that while the end 32 corner of the body by suitable means such as engages in the recess 2i the opposite end 33 bears screws I3. The bracket I2 has vertically spaced, 45 against the cylindrical exterior surface of the pinhorizontally disposed outwardly projecting lugs tle I5 which holds the latch 3l in locking position I4 that support a vertical pintle I5 that may be while the door and the link I8 are swung outattached to one of the lugs and held against wardly about the pintle I5 from the position turning movements by suitable means such as a shown in Fig. 3 to the position where the bore pin I6. The pintle I5 is provided with a conical 50 28 registers with the recess I'I. When the link recess I'I on the side thereof that faces outwardly I8 reaches the position shown in Fig. 4 the bore away from the door opening. 28 is alined with the recess Il' of the pintle I5 and A link I3 has its inner end positioned between pressure against the door II in a direction to move the lugs I4 of the hinge bracket and is provided it to a position against the Side Wall 0f the bOdy with a bore I9 in which the pintle I5 fits, the link 55 4 claims. (o1. 1c- 163) :111.8 being horizontally disposed and mounted to swing laterally' on the pintle I5. At its outer endl the link I8 is provided with vertically spaced horizontally disposedknuckles 20 and the end portion I will cause the hinge plate 24 to pivot about the pivot pin 25, the inclined surface of the recess 21 acting as a cam against the tapered end 32 of the latch pin 3l to move the latch pin axially into engagement with the recess i1 of the pintle I5, bringing the end of the conical portion 32 of the pin into engagement with the arcuate surface 22 of the knuckle 23 which holds the pin in locking engagement withthe pintl I while` the door swings to a position alongside the van body.
When the door I I is swung outwardly from the van body the latch plate 22 swings on the pvot 25 until the shoulder 29 of the door plate engageswith the shoulder 30 of the link I8 andthe recess 2l is brought into registry with the bore 28v of the link. Further movement'of the door toward closed position then causes the latch pin 3| to be cammed into engagement Witlitlie'recess 2`-f,1`oc`k ing the plate 24 to the link I8 so that the door is held in proper positionL to swing into the door opening. Y y
