r. A. WILSON VENTILATING REGISTER. APPLIOATIOI FILED NOV. 9, 1911.

INVENTOR ATTORNEYS FREDERICK AUGUSTUS WILSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VENTILATING-REGISTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Application filed November 9, 1911. Serial No. 659,294.
Patented Aug. 12,-1913.
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS VILSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New'York, borough of Brooklyin in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ventilating Register, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are to provide a' register of the characternamed with a plurality of louvers and means for ad ust-- ing and holding the said louvers in adjusted position; to provide means for limiting the full opening of the said louvers; and to simplify and economize the construction.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of aregister constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 isa vertical cross section of a register constructed in accordance with the present invention, the section being taken on the line 22- in Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, showing a fragment of the construction; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line in Fig. 3, showing a fragment of the construction.
As seen in the accompanying drawings, two doors or louvers 9, 9 are hingedly mounted at the back of a register box 10 and in superposed relation. The box 10 is structurally provided with an opening in the back, which opening is closed by the said louvers when dropped to rest upon the box. By using a plurality of louvers the air admitted into or passed from the register box is more evenly equalized for distribution over the area of the grill 11 which covers the face of the box.
The louvers are provided with hinges 12, 12,'0ne of the said hinges being secured to the box structure and the other being mounted upon a cross brace 13. Adjacent the said hinges each of the louvers is provided with. a box-like extension 14. The side walls of the extensions 14 form bearings for the pivot pins 15, 15. The pivot pins 15 in this manner are set beyond or protruded from the back of the louvers 9. This arrangement of the pins 15 in relation to the louvers 9 insures the full closure of the said louvers 21 provided in the said rib 20, as-seen best in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings. It is to form a drag or brake on the bar 19 to hold the same in fixed position relative to the rib 20 that I have'provided the washers 22, 22 to surround the bolt 18, one of said washers forming a bearing for the spiral spring 23 which is compressed or disposed under tension by the nut 24 threaded on the said bolt 18. By thisconstruction, wherein the spring 23 is employed, a yielding pressure is imposed on the washer 22 at the opposite side of the rib 20 to retard the action of the slide bar 19. While I here describe the con struction and operation employing the spring 23, it will be understood that any suitable resilient material, such as a small piece of rubber jack, may be employed.
To shift the slide bar 19 vertically, and to thereby open or close the louvers 9, I employ the toothed segment 25 which is fixedly mounted upon the shaft 26. The shaft 26 is extended to the outer side of the grill 11, and is there provided with a fixed crank arm 27 The crank arm 27 is provided with any suitable engagement means, that shown in the drawings and preferred by me being the handle 28. The teeth 29 of the segment 25 are, as shown best in Fig. 4 of the drawings, purposely separated to accommodate and cheapen the construction of the bar 19 wherein the holes 80 are provided as sockets for the reception of the teeth 29.
In the normal position of the register the arm 27 is horizontally extended, being thus disposed in convenient position so that if the register herein described be located "at the top of a room, manipulating devices of similar construction may be used to engage the handle 28. If the louvers be closed when the arm 27'is in the horizontal position, by drawing downward the handle 28, the shaft 26 and segment 25 thereon are rotated to lift the bar 19 and the links 16 connected therewith. Lifting the links 16 results in swinging the louvers 9 on the hinges 12, permitting the passage of air through the box 10 and openings of the grill l1. Reversing the movement of the arm 27 results in reversing the operation of the louvers to close the openings at the back of the said box. In any position to which the arm 27 and parts connected therewith is moved, the same is held constant by the drag of the washer 22 and bar 19 on the rib 20, being thereto actuated by the spring 23.
The shaft 26 is partly supported by the cross brace 31 extended between the vertical sides of the box 10. At the outer end of the said shaft and at the outer side of the grill 11 is provided a plate 32. The plate 32,
as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is
provided with a projecting pin 33 extended into the path or, to .be impinged upon by, the arm 27. This pin 33 limits the movement of the arm 27 when shifted to open the louvers 9. The-plate 32 is also adjustable, being rotatively mounted on the shaft 26. The edge of the said plate extends the head of the screw 34 which is employed in the structure of the grill 11 to clamp the said plate 32 when set up against the same. By this it will be seen that by releasing the screw 34 the plate 32 may be rotated on the shaft 26 and be fixed in adjusted position to limit the movement of the arm 27, and parts connected therewith, to any extent, thereby limiting the possible opening of the louvers 9.
While I have herein shown and described the register constructed and arranged. in accordance with the present invention as operated by the arm 27 and handle 28, it
'will be understood that without varying the scope of the invention the said handle and arm may be substituted by a key of any desired and approved shape. The substitution thus indicated is particularly desirable for registers situated. in the side wall of the room adjacent the floor, or in the floor of the said room. When the substitution indicated is made theoperation of the parts is in all respects the same as above set forth.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a ventilating register such as described, the combination of a plurality of louvers adapted to close the opening of said register; a structural rib vertically disposed in said register; a slide bar mounted on said rib and having at suitableintervals perforations formed therein; a plurality of links connecting said bar and said louvers to rotate said louvers as said bar is reciprocated;
teeth to engage the said perforations in said slide bar to move the same; manually manipulative means mounted on said shaft at the exposed side of said register; and a spring actuated clam mounted on said slide bar to engage said ri to hold said slide bar in adjusted position. v,
2. In a ventilating register such as described, a box having a back opening; a
louver pendantly hinged on said box to cover said back opening; a manually 'reciprocated member mounted within said box; and a link pivotally connec'tmgsaid member and PHILIP D. ROLLHAUB.
said louver, the connection of said louver a rotary shaft; a toothed segment having.
