MECHANISM FOR OPENING AND CLOSING CASEMENT WINDOWS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUrUs WILLIAM PRIOR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Manor Works, Braintree, Essex, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Opening and Closing Casement Windows, of which the following is a specification.
A mechanism frequently employed for opening and closing casement windows in which the moving frame is operated by means of a nut on a screw journalled in the fixed frame, especiallywindows in inaccessible positions, such as transoms, consists of a right and left hand screw which is journalled in the fixed frame of the window and has upon it a pulley or the like over which a cord or the like passes, so that the screw can be rotated; on each portion of the screw works a nut to which is pivoted one end of a link, the other end of which is pivoted to the opening frame. Thus as the screw is turned in one direction, the nuts approach one another, and the window is closed, but when the screw is turned in the opposite direction, the nuts are moved apart and the window is opened. l/Vith this mechanism as hitherto constructed it is diflicult to keep the window tightly shut.
According to the present invention the opening frame has mounted upon it a spring blade and upon the fixed frame is mounted a peg in such a position that as the window is closed the nose of the blade rides up over the peg and then springs back so that the peg passes through a hole in the blade, and the window is held tightly shut, and in order that the blade may be lifted out of engagement with the peg when it is desired to open the window, a lug or tooth is secured to the screw in such a position that the initial movement of the screw to open the window causes the lug or tooth to lift the blade out of engagement with the peg.
The accompanying drawing which is a perspective view illustrates a window operating mechanism made in accordance with this invention.

a is a right and left handed screw which is journalled in bearings b on the fixed frame 0 of the window and on the screw are pulleys of (5 over which ropes e 6 pass so that the screw can be rotated. On each portion of the screw a works a nut f to which is pivoted one end of a link 9, the other end of which is pivoted to the opening frame it of the window. Thus as the screw is turned in one direction the nuts f f approach each other and the window is closed, but when the screw 0 is turned in the opposite direction the nuts 7 f are moved apart and the window is opened. On the opening frame 72. is a spring blade 7' and upon the first frame 0 is a peg k, fixed in such a position that if the window is closed the nose of the blade j rides over the peg 7c and thence springs back so that the peg passes through a hole Z in the blade, and the window is tightly shut. On the screw a is secured a lug m in such a position that the initial movement of the screw or. to open the window causes the lug m to lift the blade j out of engagement with 'the peg 70 thereby allowing the windon. to be opened.
What I claim is 1. A casement window having a fixed frame, an opening frame, a screw journalled in the fixed frame, a nut on the screw, a connection between the nut and the opening frame, a spring blade on the opening frame, a peg on the fixed frame, and a lug on the screw adapted to engage with the spring blade.
2. A casement window having a fixed frame, an opening frame, a right and left handed screw journalled in the fixed frame, nuts on the screw, links pivoted to the nuts and the opening frame, a spring blade on the opening frame, a peg on the fixed frame, and a lug on the screw adapted to engage with the spring blade.
