IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,785, dated January 19, 1875; application filed I November 24, 1874.
an ordinary seat-frame, an extra bottom composed of strips of wood and supported by spiral springs,'and operating loosely in mortises in the end of the seat-frame, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, the part indicated by reference-letter A represents a seat-frame having its end pieces mortised, as shown at a, saidmortises being large enough to allow the ends or strips a'to operate freely therein. A represents the bottom of the seat, composed of strips corresponding in number to strips a, and are secured immediately beneath the same. Strips a are constructed of wood, havin g a certain degree of elasticity, and are supported by springs B.
- I prefer to use three strips, with two springs under the middle one, and three under each of the others, and so arranged that the springs in the one shall be opposite blanks in the others, as shown in the drawing.
When the pressure on strips a is increased or diminished, their ends operate in the mortises in a sliding reciprocating manner, thus allowing springs B to operate freely.
A different number of strips, and a difierent arrangement of springs, may be-substituted. The bottom, A, of the seat may be constructed of one piece, and metal maybe used inmortises a, Without changing my invention. I do not claim the application of spiral springs to wagon-seats, nor do I claim a set of strips connected at either end and provided with spiral springs operating between and at nearly right angles to aforesaid strips; but
Having thus described my invention, I de sire to secure by Letters Patent l. Strips a, supported by springs B, and constructed and combined to operate in mortises a, as and for the purpose set forth.
