UNITED STATES DANIEL BURKEY AND ADDISON R. BURTNETT, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGARETTE CASE.
Application mea october 1c, 1925. serial No. 62,878.
This invention relates to a cigarette and match holder, the general object of the invention being to provide means for providing a. watertight case whereby the contents are kept dry even though the case 1s immersed in water or is subJected to the action of the elements.
The device is mainly intended for use by bathers, gunners and other persons who cannot use an ordinary holder without dan'ger of the cigarettes becoming wet.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby upon the opening of the cover of the case, the cigarettes and matches will be raised so that the can be easily taken from the case by the ngers.
A still further object ofr the invention is to provide means for placing the cover under pressure when the same is closed, to insure a watertight Joint between the cover and the case.
rllhis invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the 'combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln describinlg our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which lligure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 is a rear view.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure'2.
Figure l is a similar view, but showing the cover in raised position.
Figure 5 is a view of the cigarette and match holder.
Figure@ is a sectional view through the member for holding the cover closed.
ln these views, 1 indicates the body of the case and 2 indicates the cover thereof which is connected with the body by the hinge 3. 'llhe hinge is movably connected with the body by means of the slots a in the hinge through which the vfasteners 5 pass. This arrangement will permit the cover to sit squarely on the body. rlhe cover is provided with a gasket Gand it is pressedv tightly upon the body, when closed, by the roller 7 carried by the sprin'g arms 8 which are pivotally connected with the sides of.
hinge 3 moves on the body, as will be understood.'
A U-shaped holder 10 is movably mounted I in the body and is caused to move upwardly when the cover is opened by the chain 11 which connects the holder with the cover. This holder is divided into two chambers by a partition 12 so that 4cigarettes can be `placed in one chamber and matches in the other. The match chamber is shortened by means of a block 13 placed in the bottom thereof. As will be seen, when the cover is thrown open, the holder will be partly projected from the body, so that the cigarettes and matches can be easily taken therefrom.
One edge of the body is corrugated, as shown at 14C, to provide a match striking surface, and such a surface can be placed on the interior of the cover to insure a striking surface when the exterior of the device 1s wet.
A small chain 16 is fastened to the body, and safety pins 17 are attached to the ends of the chain so that the device can be fastened to the bathing suit or other 'garment of the wearer.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that we have provided a neat and attractive cigarette case, the contents of which are kept dry even though the case may be immersed in water. The case can be easily attached to the bathing suit or other garment, so that a bather can enjoy a smoke after he swims out to a float or the like as well as on the shore.
lt is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of our invention will vbe readily apparent.
WVe desire it to be understood lth'at we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lWhat we claim is A case of thecla/ss described, comprising a body, a cover therefor, a hinge for con llO necting the cover to the body, said hinge beto' reecive the roller and having recesses ing movably connected with one of the parts, therein into which the roller passes as it is clamping means for holding the cover in pushed over the curved surface. 1Q
closed position, such means comprising In testimony whereof We affix our signai sprmg arms pivoied to the body, a roller tures. carried by the arms for engaging a. cover, DANIEL BURKEY. the outer surface of the cover being curved ADDISON R. BURTNETT.
