iaieateii KENTON MCIVIOSIMAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
WATERPROOF oreerm'r rn AND CIGAR CASE.
Application filed octoifer 11, 1920. Serial Nb. 416,210.
To (Ml whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, KnN'roN McMosDIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of hlarionfand State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vaterproof (ligarette and Cigar Cases. of which the following is a specification.
ping said edge and turned down a suitable distance on the inside to keep the gasket in \place. The lid is hinged to they case at one 40f its ends, preferably, as here shown, by a link hinge to allow of the requisite flexibility ofaction for easy opening and closing of the case. This comprises a metal link 14;, through one end of which a loop 15 is bent A very important object of this iilven and a straight end of the metal riveted to tion is to provide a cigarette case that will the end of the case, and a similar loop 16, be water-tight when closed whereby t may fastened to the other end of the link and be exposed to rainy weather and spraylmi rtvetedstmthe flange of the lid. The lid is boating and sailing, and particularly whereby it may be attached to a belt or carried in the pocket of a bathing suit and ke tfby bathers constantly within convenient reach. The object, also is to provide su h, a device adapted to be quickly and easily opened, and which will be so inexpensive'yto manufacture that it can compete with other cigarette containers in commercial use.
I accomplish the above, and other objects which will hereinafter appear, by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- A,
-Fig. 1.,is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the side worn closest to the persons body. This viewshows portions of the case broken away and sectioned. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the hinge-end of the case. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the opposite orcatch-end of same.
of the case, and Fig. 6, is a perspective view on a larger scale of the spring-catch which holds the lid closed.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views of the drawing. The body 7. of the case is here shown as relatively long and narrow, but this is sub ject to variation at will of the manufacturer. It is preferably separated by a partition 8 into two compartments of which the larger 9 is for cigarettes (or cigars) and the smaller 10 is for matches. 7
The lid 11 has a flange 12,into which the upper edge of the case telescopes in the manner shown, at closing, and to insure a water tight fit between the flange anchthe case when the lid is closed, I provide a gasket 13, of any suitable.--materia1 such as rubber, a band of which is here shown as applied to the outside of the case close to the upper edge of the latter and overlap- Qnormallfy: ield open by a leaf spring 17, one
j,\end offw ll ich is riveted to the end of the "case and the other end of which bears out ward] y against the flange of the lid.
The catch at the other end comprises an outwardly tapering notched lug 18, fixed-in the end of the lid-flange, and a leaf-spring l9 arched at its middle as shown and rigidly riveted at its lower end to the end of the case. In its upper end is a longitudinal slot 20, adapted for the passage through it of lug 1S andalso adapted to enter the notch in the lngby the tension of the spring when released, and form a lock.- The end of the lug is preferably tapered for easy insertion. and the release of the lug by the spring is effected by straightening the bend in the leaf by pressure from the operators hand, upon which the spring 17 will automatically open the lid.
The case and lid will preferably be curved as shown in Fig. 2, to better conform to the shape of the wearers body, and the concave side will have a pair of spring-opened pins 1, 21, for attaching the cigarette case to a lelt or other part of the clothing. The ends of the pins will be held in housings 22, 22. On the lid ofthe cigarette holder is a match striking surface 23.
The operation of my invention is so obvious from what has already been stated that further description is deemed unnecessary'.
Having thus fully described my invention what T claim as new and wish to secure by Letter Patent of the United States, is-
In a case for cigarettes and cigars, a body portion, a lid with flanges into which the ineopeo and outside of ,the body forming a waiterfrom the hinge comprising a notched lug tight joint, a link-hinge at one end of the seenred to one member and a bent leaf 10 case connecting the lid to the body, autospring secured to the other member, said metie, means comprlsing a, leaf spring leaf spring having a slot to receive the lug riveted at one end to thecase and the other and engage the notch in the lug.
end bearing against the flange of the lid Signed at Indianapo1is,,1ndiana, this the for opening the lid when released, and a 9th dayoflOctober 1920. 7
spring catch at the other end of'the case -KENTON MOMOSIMAN.
