IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSH AND MOP HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,508, dated January 5, 1875 application filed October 23, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN O. MONTIGNANI, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Holders for Mops and Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

My invention consists in the combination of a solid wooden split handle, a sliding fastening-ring or ferrule, and a pair of clampingjaws of novel construction, whereby a brush, mop, or other article may be readily placed and held between'the jaws, and as readily removed when desired.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an edge view of my invention,applied to a brush. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig.7

The handle A consists of a solid piece of wood, having one end split for the required distance, so as to form two branches, or a, and provided with apin, b, glued in a corresponding hole at the end of the split, to prevent it from extending farther. On the extremity of each branch is a clamping-jaw, 0, made of metal, in skeleton form, and provided with a socket, c, fitting the end of the branch, which may be shouldered to correspond with the socket, or the latter may be secured by a pin or screw. The clamping-jaws are notched or serrated, to facilitate the holding of the brush,

mop, or other article placed between them. If desired, the inner face of each jaw may be provided with a concave depression to fit over a corresponding knob or projection on the back of a brush, so that the working suriace of the brush, when attached, may be adjusted at any desired angle with relation to the handle, after the manner of a ball-and-socket joint. The wood composing the handle is elastic, and the jaws have a tendency to spring toward each other; but in order to hold them together, and also as a security against further extension of the split, I provide a ring orferrule, D, which works between the pin 12 and the sockets c. A brush, E, or a mop, cloth, chamois-skin, or other article may be placed. between the jaws O and, by sliding the ring D to the position shown, securely held and prevented from displacement. I

The detachable metallic clamping-jaws O 0, each constructed with a socket, c, and notches or serrations, in combination with a handle, A, having the elastic arms a a, and carrying the sliding clampiugring D, the whole being arrangedvior operation, substantially as and for the purpose described.
