@6% t gf UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
LEONARD LYON, OE EEINEUEG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGH-THILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 58,176, dated December 29, 1874; application filed April 2,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD LYON, of Edinburg, county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a Sleigh-Thill, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to make sleighthills much stronger than has heretofore been accomplished by forming the transverse bar A and the outer projecting or left-hand thill A in one and the same piece, by bending said piece in the proper place to accomplish this end. Another object of my invention is that the left hand thill may be drawn over or against an obstruction Without lookin g, by having a rounded corner, as shown at c c', Figs. l and 2, of accompanying' drawings.
By this invention greater beauty and symmetry are attained than in any other construction.
Figure I is an oblique view of my invention, exhibiting a sleigh in the rear in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top-plan view of the same, showing one bend only at c.
For the purposes of a cutter or genteel sleigh the thill A may have two bends, a lateral and a vertical, as shown in Fig. l at c and f. The right-hand thill B and cross-bar d are formed in the usual Way, and are then secured to my invention as represented in the drawings, Figs. l and 2.
The bends c and c are vital to my invention, and the bend fmay be made also in addition thereto in order to elevate the rear end of the thills Whenever it is desired.
It will be readily observed that in this forni of construction projecting surfaces Will not so readily obstruct the passage of the sleigh as heretofore.
It will also be understood that my invention can be used on either side of the vehicle-that is to say, either left or right hand sideby giving the proper bend.
By this construction one-fourth the number of joints are saved, thereby giving corresponding strength to the parts.
I claim as my invention- The thill A and projecting cross'bar A in the same piece, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the thill B and crossbar d, the part A c A', as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses this 25th day of March, 1874.
LEONARD LYON.
