Description

Patenied Apr. 13, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
PEBGY 1. KLEINDIENST, OF BROOKLYN, ,NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 RAYMOND S. NORRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' Application led May 2,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known ,that I, PERCY P. KLEIN DIENST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and. 5 Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification. My said invention relates to an improvement in stockings and specifically to means whereby the seam may be kept straight which appears at the back of full fashioned stockings, and which also occurs in thc shape of a mockseam on other stockings. It is found to be a matter of diiiculty -to keep the seams straight at the back of stockings of this character and this detracts from their appearance. 1
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 isa perspective of a stocking embodying my invention, and
Figurev 2, a sec-tion on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. In the practice of my invention a garter 10 is attached to the stocking 11, ordinarily a little below the knee, and it is found that when such a garter is correctly proportioned to the circumference of the stocking the garter will prevent the stocking from being dragged to one side and thus will tend to maintain the seam in a straight line. Various methods -of securing a garter to a stocking may be utilized as by sewing it on or by knitting an elastic zone in the stocking.
The method which at present appears to me preferable to any other consists in applying' rubber latex to the stocking in a narrow zone at `such a position as to be located 40 slightly below the knee of the wearcr.- This rubber latex may beapplied in various ways as for example by 'spraying it'on the fabric. [After the latex has been applied or while it is being applied steps are taken tocure 5 it in situ so that it will form a permanent elastic band with the fabric embedded therein as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This band STOCKINGlj- 1925. Serial No. 27,578.
that it will it vaccurately and causes thestocking to make a good appearance either on the counter or as worn.
In forming the elastic zone on the stocking it will be obvious that the fabric of the' stocking will be embedded in the rubber. It
will be understoodthat this processi might be carried out by means of a rubber zone molded or otherwise attached to the fabric so as to embed the fabric therein and perlhaps, in other ways, all falling within the purview of my invention. In order that the stocking may present a good appearance the rubber of the elasticband may be colored by any suitable means either to match the stocking or to harmonizewith it in other ways as by a suitable contrasting color.
respects without departing from the spirit thereof and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification vbut only as indicated in the appended claims.
My invention may be changed in various Having thusfully described my said in-` vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. Axgarment having a tubular portion with the yarns in a zone thereof embedded in an annulusof rubber, substantially as set forth.
2. A garment having a tubular portion with a zone thereof embedded in an annulus consisting of an elastic vulcanized gum, substantially as set forth.l
l2. A stocking having a seam at the rear of the leg, and means for keeping the seam straight comprising an elastic garter having the fabric of the stocking embedded therein in a zone co-eXtensive with said garter, substantially as set forth.
` 4. A stocking having a seam at the rear of the leg, and meansfor keeping the seam straight comprising a garter of coherent homogeneous elastic materiall having thel yarns of the stocking fabric embedded therein, substantially as set forth.
5. The process of forming elastic sections v5 in a garment having. a tubular portion by spraying thereon rubber latex in an annular zone or stripe, and tially as set forth.
6. The process o curing the latex, substanf forming a garter for a stocking by spraying -rubberlatex thereon 10 in an annular zone, and thereafter curing the latex, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at New York, New York, this eighteenth day of December, A. D., 15 nineteen hundred and twenty-four.
