LOCK-GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June "2, 1921.
Application filed February 5, 1919, Serial No. 275,195. Renewed April 23, 1921. Serial No. 463,977.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. SwANTEns, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lock-Garments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to garments, such as shirts for mens wear, or shirtwaists for womens wear, and the principal object of the invention is to produce a garment or garments of this character which will not creep upward or slip downward from the waist line of the wearer, but which will be held firmly in position relative to the Waistline.
These objects are obtained by employing a differentiated band, or plaits 0r plaiting, or seams, inserts or cores, or a plurality of cords, same running substantially horizontally around the body of the garment at the waistline, and which may be either incorporated with the outer or inner garment, or may band and made attachable to said outer or Or any other method of roughening the surface of'the goods at the waistline may be employed.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a shirt constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the garment constructed in sections, with the upper and lower sec tions joined by a single differentiated band, the latter acting as a lock at the waistline against the trousers to prevent the slipping or creeping of the shirt;
Fig. 2 is a drawing similar to Fig. 1, showing a garment of this construction such as a shirtwaist adapted for womens wear;
Fig. 3 shows a modification employing a series of encircling plaits or seams;
Fig. 1 shows a modification employing a plurality of cores, cords or inserts at the waistline Fig. 5 shows a diflerentiated separate band attachable to either the outer or inner garment.
Referring more particularly to the drawinvention consists in constructing the shirt, shirtwaist or other garment so as to embody the upper portion 1, the lower portion 2 and the encircling and connecting horizontal portion 3. lhis portion 3 may consist of a single band as shown in be embodied as a separate;
Figs. 1 and 2, or a series of plaits or seams 6 as shown in Fig. 3, or a plurality of cores or inserts, or a plurality of cores, cords or inserts 7 in lieu of the aforesaid constructions shown. The portion 3 is sewed or otherwise suitably secured to, and thus o1ns the two aforesaid upper and lower port1ons 1 and 2. If desired, the connectmg portion 3 may be made of a relatively elastic fabric or material so as to form a snug waistline. Likewise, the upper portion 1 may be made of silk or other relatively costly material, while the lower portion 2 may be made of cotton or other relatively cheaper material. This results in cheapening the construction of the garment as a whole, but this result is merely incidental to the construction herein shown, the main purpose of which is to supply a garment which will not creep or slip, as above outlined.
If a single band is used for the portion 3, the upper and lower scams 4 will serve other method of roughening the waistline of the garment may be employed for the purpose, such as the insertion of cores or inserts as shown at 7 in Fig. 4.
Thus it will be seen that I have herein designed a garment and means of the character described, and which will afford the advantages herein set forth; that is to say, a garment Which will not creep or slip, but will stay permanently in place at the waistline, and likewise a garment which can be readily and cheaply repaired by the substitution or renewal of worn out portions without the substitution of the entire garment. While the preferred mode of construction is to permanently incorporate the' differentiated band with the inner or outer garment, still the advantage of the invention may be derived from'a separable, differentiated band, made attachable to either of said garments.
While I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing the garment described, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my inven- ,tion, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in thezappended claims. For example, the garment need not be constructed in sections, but an integral garment may be taken and the waistline thereof roughened or dif- .ferentiated by seams, plaits, bands, cores,
cords or inserts, as described.
prising upper and lower encircling members, and a strip having roughened exterior and interior faces with relation to the said upper and lower 'members for connecting the same.
