C. S. WRIGHT POLISH ROD CLAMP Filed Oct. '7, 1925 INVENTORS hf rug 1f BY 7 Patented Mar. 30, 1926.

OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL SUPPLY COMPANY,
OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
POLISH-ROD CLAMP.
Application filed October 7, 1925. Serial No. 61,150.
To aZZ whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE S.'WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of 3 Ohio, have invented new and useful I mprovements in Polish-Rod Clamps, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to clamps deslgned particularly for gripping the pol1sh rods of oil well pumps, but I do not l1m1t the lnvention to that purpose as it may be used whereever a strong eificient rod clamp 1s needed.
It is the object of this invention to provide a clamp by which the actuatlng power is greatly multiplied through the action of a compond lever mechanism operated by a screw or equivalent device.
Referring to the accompanying drawlng, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my clamp showing a rod clamped thereby; Fig. 2, a top view with a portion broken away, and Fig. 3, a plan view with the gates open and a pore05 broken 01f. 1 On the drawing, 1 designates the body 25 member of the clamp. It has between its ends a U-shaped recess 2 having in its back face 3 the groove 4- to receive one side of the polish rod 5. The body has at its ends and substantially in line with the face 3 the trunnions 6 to which mechanism for reciprocating the clamp is attached.
' 7 is the body gate or clamping member which closes the open side of the U-shaped recess. The gate has a pair of hinge members 8 working in slots 9 in the outer end of the side wall 11 of the recess 2, the hinge members being held in place by the hinge pin 10. p The body gate has an inwardly pro-- jecting portion 12 which when the gate 1s closed extends into the recess 2 and the face 13 lying close to and parallel wlth the face 3. I The face 13 has a groove'14 slmllar to the groove 4 and lying parallel therewith and directly opposite thereto, so that the two grooves 4 and 14 may engage the opposite sides of the polish rod or other bar or rod. When the gate is closed, a lug 15 on' the face 13 is in the recess 16 in the face 3, the lower face of the lug resting on the bottom of the recess to support the outer end of the ,gate and relieve the hinge pm and hlnge members of any shearing action.-
The remaining end wall of the recess 2 has the ears 17 between which, the huge 9 the recess 22 to receive the eye bolt 23 through whose eye the hinge pin 10 extends.
The eye bolt swings on the pin '10 and has the clamping nut 24 threaded thereon. The free end of the lever 19 has the open slot 25 into which the bolt may be swung when the lever 19 is in operative position as shown in Fig. 1. When the bolt isin the slot the nut 24 may be screwed down by the aid of the hand lever 26 against the back of the lever 19 to cause the latter by means of the shoulder 21 toforce the body member inwardly so as to grip the rod 5 firmly in the grooves 4 and 14.
It is seen that the power delivered by the nut 24 to the lever 19 is greatly multiplied since the length of the lever 19 is many times the distance of the shoulder 21 from the center of the pivot pin 20, and since the distance between the center of the pin 10 and the point of application of the shoulder 21 to the body gate 7 is greater than the distance from the center of the pin 10 to the center of the rod 5.
I claim- 1 A body member having a rod-engaging surface, a body gate member hinged at one end to the body member at one side of said surface, a clamping gate hinged at. one end to the body member at the opposite side of the said surface and having a portion close to its pivot to engage the free end of the body gate member and force the latter toward the body member and into gripping contact with a rod engaging the said surface, and power means carried by one of the said members and applicable to the free end of the clamping gate member to increase the pressure of the said portion against the body gate.
2. surface, a ody gate hinged at one end to A. bod member having a rod-engaging the body member at one side of said surface,
a clamping gate hinged at one end to the i body member at the opposite side of the said surface and having a "portion close to its pivot to engage the free end of the body gate and force the latter toward the body member and into gripping contact with a, rod engaging the said surface, a threaded bolt having an eye pivoted on the pivot of the body gate,
and a nut on the bolt for operating the clamping gate to increase the pressure of the said portion against the body gate. 10
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my signature.
"CLYDE SQWRIGHT.
