Application filed December 18,1926... strata. 155,565.
7 My invention relates to wire line drilling clamps, and its object is to provide. a: novel compound leverage for closing the clamping jaws whereby the grip ot'the jaws on the wire line will be greatly increased over what it would be with the use of simple levers.
Referring to the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a clamp embodying my'invention, the jaws being open; Fig." 2, a
plan; view of the same with the jaws closed;
and Fig. 3, a fragmentary view partly in section, showmg the application of the compound leverage. 1
On the drawing 1 and 2 are two clamping '1 aws having the recesses 3 and 4 to recelve a wlre llne to be clamped between the aws The jaws fulcrum onthe knife edgest and 6. carried by the blocks 7 and 8, held inplace by a bolt 9 extending through the projections 10 and 11 on the outer ends of the jaws.
The device so far described is claimedin Patent No. 1,601,197 granted September 28, 1926, on an application made by me, and forms no part of the present invention,
On the top of the jaws are the wire line guides 12 and 13 which overlap the space between the jaws and prevent the wire line from being drawn into the same. This feature is claimed in my application Serial No. 143,146 filed October 26, 1926, and forms no part of the present invention.
The jaws are provided with operating levers or arms 14 and 15' integral with the jaws, the lever 14 being somewhat longer than the lever 15. The inner face of the lever 14 has the lug 16 projecting toward the.
lever 15 and adapted to enter a recess 17 in the inner face of the lever 15. In a fork in. the free end of the lever 15 is a lever 18 pivoted on the pin 19 passed through the members of the fork.
ranged and proportioned that the inner end of the lever 18 may, when the jaws are closed, enter the hole 20 in the lug 16 and be turned approximately parallelwith the lever 15 when the jaws are closed. The lever 14 has on its inner face a curved groove or recess 21 having its inner portion opposite.
The parts are so arouter edge engages the stop 22 in the forked end of the lever 15. WVhen the lever 18 isin engagement with'the stop 22 and the levers 14 and 15 are swung toclosing position, the leadlng :end 23 of thelever 18 enters the groove 21 and is automaticallyguided thereby to a position approximatelyparallel with the lever 15, as shown on Figs. 2 and 3, the 3 end 23 of the lever 18 being curved to correspond to the curve'of the groove 21.
.l Vhen the jaws are nearly closed the link 24 which is swingingly held on the outer end of the lever 18 by the pin 25 is slipped over the endof the lever 14 and the screw 26 which works in the end of the link and against the outer edge of the lever 18 is turned by the handle 27 so as to draw the lever 14 and the outer end of the lever 18 toward each other.
j The lug 16 is the fulcrum of the lever 18; power is applied by the screw to theouter end of the lever 18; and power is applied to the lever 15 at the pivot 19' which is approximately half way between the lug 16 and the screw 26. This multiplies the closing power of the jaws by two as compared with the power which would be applied by simple levers closed by the screw, as in the instance shown in my said patent and application. 1 I claim 7 1 1. In. a clamp, a pair of pivotally connected jaws, operating arms connected there-.
to, a lever pivoted to one arm and fulcrumed on the other arm, and power means pivoted to the latter arm and arranged to be applied to the lever to move the jaws toward each other.
2.-In a clamp, a pair of pivotally connected jaws, operating arms connected thereto, a lever pivoted to one arm and fulcrumed on the other arm, means pivoted to the lever and attachable to the latter arm, and a power device operable between the said lever and the said means for forcing the jaws toward each other. 1
3. In a clamp, a pair of pivotally connected jaws, operating arms connectedthereto, a lever pivoted between its ends to one arm and having one end tulc'rumed on the other arm, and power means connected 'to .the latter arm and arranged to be applied to the remaining end of the lever to move the jaws toward each other.
4. In a clamp, a pair of pivotally connected aws, operating arms connected therethe shorter arm, a'fnlcrum on the longer arm for the inner end. of the lever, and power means connected to the free end of the longer arm and'arranged to be applied to the outer end of the lever to move the jaws toward each other.
6. In a clamp, 21 pair of pivotally connected jaws, operating arms connected there to, a lever permanently pivoted between its ends to one arm, means connecting both ends of the lever to the other arm, and a power device acting on one end of the lever to move the jaws toward each other.
7. In a clamp, a pair of 'pivotally connected aws, operating arms connected thereto, a. lever pivoted between its ends to one arm, means connecting both ends of the lever to the other arm, and a power device carried by the lever and acting on one end of thelever to move the jaws toward each other. 8. In a clamp, a pair of pivotally connected jaws, an operating arm for each jaw, a lug carried by one arm and having a hole therein, a lever carried by the other arm and adapted to enter the hole when the jaws are being'closed, and means for applying power to the lever for closing the jaws tightly.
9. In a clamp, a pair of pivotally connected jaws, an operating arm for each jaw, a lug carried by one arm and having a hole therein, a lever carried by the other arm and adapted to enter the hole when the jaws are being closed, and means for applying power to the lever for closing the aws tightly, the first arm having a groove to receive the lever and guide it automatically into the hole.
10. In a clamp, a pair of pivotallyconnected jaws, an operating arm for each jaw, a-lug carried by one arm and having a hole therein, a lever carried by the other arm and adapted to enter the hole, and means for applying power to the lever for closing the jaws tightly, the first arm having a groove to receive the lever and guide it automatically into the hole and the first arm having a stop for holding the lever in such a position as to cause it to enter the groove automatically when the jaws are being closed.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aftlx my signature.
