Description

March 114, 1950 F. J. SERRA VISE FOR HOLDING CIRCULAR OBJECTS Filed July 28, 1947 $7tm fNVENTOR. I BY Patented Mar. 14, 1950 A YUNITED STATES PATENT LOFFICE VISE FOR HOLDING CIRCULAR OBJECTS Frank J ohnSerra, Nashwauk, Minn.
Application July 28, 1947, Serial No. 764,122
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a vise and has special reference to such which are adapted to hold circular objects whereby work may be readily performed thereon either by hand, by drill press, or the like.
It is well known that it is almost impossible to hold a circular object in an ordinary flat-jawed vise while torque is being applied thereto. Thus, it is one of the principal objects of the instant invention to provide a vise capable of firmly holding a comparatively wide range of diameters of circular stock so that torque may be applied thereto without the objectionable twisting of the stock.
Another object is to provide such a vise in as simple and inexpensive a manner as possible.
Still another object is to provide a vise that will hold a roller from a caterpillar tractor track while work may be performed thereon and while the large nuts on the bearings thereof may be adjusted.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description of the invention proceeds.
In the drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a vise made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the swingable end of the clamping bolt.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 represents the rectangular base plate portion of the vise and 2 indicates the angle iron jaw of the vise which is fixed to the base. The numeral 3 indicates the somewhat L-shaped movable jaw which is made of suitable rectangular bar iron bent at right angles as at 4 and twisted to form a pivotal connection with the upstanding pilot member 5 which is fixed to the base I.
Pivctally installed at the'opposite end of the movable jaw 3 is the clamping bolt 6 which is threaded at its outer end and provided with a nut I. The bolt 6 is selectively engageable within a bifurcation or fork 8 in an upstanding member of the fixed jaw 2 for closing the vise.
To provide positive means for holding circular stock, I have installed on each of the jaws of the vice, a pair of triangular'frictional holding means or calks 9, each of which is longitudinally slidably carried on its respective jaw as by a pair of stud bolts l0 through the elongated openings H in the jaw which are screw-threaded into the 2 base member of the triangular calks. The studs are readily loosened to permit selective adjustability of the calks after which they may be clamped tightly in place again, the pairs of calks bieing normally in spaced opposed relation to each 0 her.
To facilitate holding circular stock which may have a relatively long shankor axle projecting therefrom, or stock which must be drilled, I have provided a relatively large opening l2 in the base I centrally thereof, and a passage or gate l3 from the outer edge of one side of the base to the opening, thus permitting of the handling of stock which may be otherwise impossible to hold in a vise.
In order to handle stock or parts which have a flange such as a tractor track roller and the like,
the lower member of the angle iron fixed jaw may be cut-away arcuately as at I4 concentric with the opening 12, this provides a guide for the flange and permits of ready positioning thereof in the vise.
In the operation of the device, the nut 1 is loosened to permit the bolt 6 and the movable jaw 3 to be swung outwardly, a pieceof stock is inserted in (or over as the case may be) the opening I2, and the jaw 3 is swung inwardly so that,
the calks 9 contact the stock. At this time the calks may be adjusted, if they are not properly positioned to hold the piece of stock, after'which the bolt 6 is swung into the bifurcation 8 in the upstanding member of the fixed jaw and the clamping nut 1 is tightened to draw the jaws of the vise together, thereby pressing the calks firmly against the stock being held. As pressure or stress is applied to the calks against the stock by the continued tightening of the nut I on the bolt 6, the frictional holding stress is increased in proportion thereto and after suflicient stress has been applied, the stock is ready for work to be done thereon, be it drilling, wrench work, or otherwise.
If desired a handle l5 may be welded to the nut I to facilitate the tightening thereof and assist in applying the leverage necessary to tighten the nut sufliciently to apply the necessary stress against the stock being held.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A vise comprising a base; a fixed jaw carposed relation to said fixed jaw; each of said jaws having elongated slots therethrough; a pair of calks adjustably carried on each of said jaws by said slots; a clamping bolt carried by one of said jaws and being selectively engageable with the other of said jaws; an opening through said base positioned centrally of said calks; and a passage leading from the outer edge of said base to said opening.
2. The structure as set forth in claim 1 and a guide on said fixed jaw to align stock held by the vise.
3. A vise for holding circular stock comprising a base; a jawcarried by and upstanding from said base; a movable jaw pivotally carried on said base in opposed relation to said first mentioned jaw; each of said jaws having elongated slots therethrough; a pair of calks adjustably carried by said slots on each of said jaws in spaced op- 4 posed relation to each other; and pivotal means for clamping said jaws toward each other; said base having an opening therethrough positioned centrally of said calks and a passage leading from said opening to the outer edge of said base.
