Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application filed November 24, 1919. Serial No. 340,376.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr H. STALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at ohunbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Auto-Pistoh-Clamping Vise, of which the following is the specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a clamping vise tor engagingand holding g ns-engine pistons while they are being finished in the process of manufacture, but more particularly, while they are being afterward repaired, and the tool is of more interest, therefore, to garage and repair shop mechanics, where vise facilities are more limited.
A further object is to provide a quickacting mechanism which will not mar or injure the piston in any way, and which can be bolted to a bench, table, post, or other suitable support.
I accomplish the above, and other objects, by the mechanism illustrated, herewith; wherein I Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with a piston held by it in position for work to be done thereon.
Fig. 2 is an underside plan view.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the three views.
The base 41. of cast-iron in the form of an annular disk, recessed at 5, on its under side, to save weight and cost of material and to provide room for pivot-bolt heads. It has perforated ears 6, for bolting to a bench, and has a diametrical slot 7 for the passage of a clamp-bolt and to receive and guide a clamp-lug, which will presently be described in. detail. The slot terminates in a large circular opening 8, for the passage of the piston pitman.
1W ounted on the top of the base 4, is a V- shaped clamp-head 9, through the perforated short stem of which is a bolt 10, which enters the recessed portion 5, of the .base, through slot 7, and is retained by a nut 11. The clamp-head also has an underside lung 12, which operates with a close sliding fit in slot 7, This lug is suificientlyclose to bolt 10 to serve as a lock: for not 1'1. The inner faces of the bifurcated portion of the clamp are lined with leather 13 to prevent injury to the piston clamped by it.
Dianietrically opposite the clamp-head 9 is a second clamp-head having, a curved flange 14:, also lined with leather on its side toward head 9. It has an outer slotted member 15, through which is a retaining, bolt 16, the lower end of which held in. base 4:. Resting upon the member 1.5, is a cam 17, which is pivoted on the upper end of bolt 16, and bears against the flange 14; of the clamp-head. The cam has a handle 18 by which it is rocked about bolt 16.
In the operation of my device the clamphead'9 is set, in its distance from the last head, roughly, to fit the size of the piston to be operated on; then, after the piston is placed between the two clamp-heads, it is held by so rocking cam 17 as to force its clamp-head tightly against the piston. Should. there be a pitman attached to the piston it may drop down. through the opening 8. The lower end of the piston rests upon the base 4.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a piston-vise, a base having a diametrical slot, a clampingphead mounted on the base and having: a lug enterine: said, slot, means for holding the clamping-head in a given position, a second clampingdiead on the base diametrically opposite the first clamping-head, having a curved flange and. also having a slot in alinement with the slot of the base, a cam on the last clampinghead acting against said. curved flange, and a bolt pivoting the cam and passing through the slot in the second clamping-head and securing the cam and second clamping-head to the base.
2. In a piston-vise, a base having a diametrical slot, a clamping-head mounted. on the base and havine a lug entering said slot, means for holding the clamping-head in a given position, comprising a bolt passing through the head and slot of the base and having a nut held by the end of said lug from rotating, a second clamping-head on the base diametrically opposite the first clampinghead, having a curved. flange and also having a slot in alinement with the slot of the base a cam on the last clampinghead acting against said curved flange, a bolt plvotlng the cam and passlng through the slot 1n the second clamplng-head and securing the cam and second clamping-head to the base, and linings of soft material on JOSEPH H. STALEY.
