UNITED gTATES PATENT FFIE JOHN H. BAXTER, OF SLIGO, COLORADO.
PIPE AND ROD CLAMP.
Application filed May 23, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. BAXTER, anative-born citizen of the United States, residing at Sligo, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe and Rod Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps and more particularly to that type which are adapted for use in connection with turning or lift- .ing well boring tools, although the device may be conveniently used as a vise attachment for use in the ordinary blacksmiths vise.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be cheaply produced and which may be conveniently secured upon ordinary well drilling rods, pipes or similar devices without slipping the device over the end of the rod.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character embodying an adjustably pivoted jaw member which is operated through the medium of a screw to be drawn tightly into engagement with the main jaw member between the sides of which the first jaw member is pivoted.
Further objects of the invention will ap pear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4: is a transverse section on the line 4.4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing a modified form.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the body of the device comprises two separated plates 1 and 2 which are connected together at one end and are held in parallelism by means of the separator piece. This separator piece prevents plates being crushed or bent when the device is clamped in the vise. The upper portion of each plate is provided with a recess 3 having a serrated upper wall and forming a stationary jaw against which the pipe is clamped by the lever 4:. This lever is provided with a right Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented A191. 2'7, 1915.
Serial No. 769,465.
sition to the stationary jaws 3 and may be removable, as shown in Fig. 5. In this in stance the jaw proper is shown at 9 and has an ear 10 which extends into a recess in the lever 4 and has a locking pin 11 passing, directly therethrough. In this modification also it will be noticed that the walls of the recess 3 are smooth and removable jaws 12 are secured to the outer faces of the plates 1 and have overlapping serrated flanges whose inner edge lies flush with the inner surface of the plates 1. In both types the outer end of the lever is slightly offset and bifurcated so as to receive the eye 13 of an adjusting or clamping bolt 14: which is pivoted to the lever by the pin 15. This bolt has threaded thereon a wing nut 16 having an enlarged base or flange 17 adapted to bridge across the plates when in operative position, as shown in Fig. 1 in full lines.
After the member to be clamped is placed between the jaws the bolt is swung between the plates and the flange 17 of the wing nut engaged with the underside thereof. By screwing the nut upon the bolt it will be readily understood how the pipe, rod
or bolt is clamped between the jaws. The length of the screw threads upon the bolt is such that considerable adjustment may be obtained by simply unscrewing or screwing the nut 16 upon the bolt. If it is. desired to secure a greater range of adjustment, however, the laterally bent end 5 of the lever is adjusted between the plates, as will be readily understood.
What is claimed is In a pipe or rod clamp, the combination of a body, comprising a single piece of metal bent back upon itself to form a pair of parallel plates, and a bar secured between said plates and adapted to hold them in separated relation, of a lever pivoted between the plates at the connected end, a portion of the adjacent sides of the plates and lever being cut out end serrated toform the In testimony whereof I affix my signature jaws of the clamp, and means mounted on in presence of tWo witnesses.
the free end of the lever to clamp the same JOHN H. BAXTER. between the plates, said means cooperating Witnesses:
5 With the plates to hold the members in T. J. CAREY,
locked position. J. H. STALEY.
