(so-AROUND Tone-s non DRILLING MACHINES.
Application filed September It is a further object of the invention to i provide pipe tongs in which the jaws when i r in use will always remain in substantially parallel relation. 7
Another ob'ect of the invention resides in the provision of pipe tongs of the above-described character in which the jaws are caused to grip the pipe to a degree which varies with the force applied to the handle of the tongs for rotatin 'the pipe.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from theiollow-. ing description when taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the wrench partly broken away, j I V V Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wrench also partly broken away, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken-on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates generally the wrench which includes the semicircular jaws 2 and 3; the former being pivoted at 4 to a lug 5 formed on the arm 6, and the latter being pivoted at 7 to a link 8 which is in turn pivoted to a lug 9 on the arm 6 as indicated by the numeral 10. The lugs 5 and 9 combine to provide a U-shapedterminal on one end of the arm 6, 7
Each of the jaws Qand 3 is provided with a substantially semicircular slip 11 which is locked in position by means of the springpressed pins 12 and these slips may be provided on their concave surfaces with the keys 13 for biting into the outer surface of the pipe section when the wrench is in use. I
In applying the wrench to apipe section the jaws are first swung into position around the pipe and the clamp or yoke 14 which is pivoted to the end 15 of the jaw 3 is swung 29,1925. seriainossasn.
over the projection on jaw 2, after which the screw 17 is turned up until the jaws 2 and 3 arefdrawn tightly against the wall of the pipe section. i 1 i Obviously. it is necessary that the jaw 2 and grip the pipe. with considerably more force than is possible by a mere tightening ot the screw 17 and itis accordingly an object of the invention to providea structure whereby the gripping action of the jaws 2 and 3 may vary ,withthe turn inn; force or moment which it is necessary to apply toithe arm 6; To this end thejaw 3 is provided with a lug 18 which extendsinto the space between the lugs 5 and 9 of the arm 6 and which is adapted to be engaged by the lug 9 when force is applied to the arm 6 thereby drawing the jaws 2 and 8 toward each other with a force that varies directly with the lateral force applied to the arm, 6.
As hereinbefore stated the present invention is intended for use with the turntable of well-boring rigs, and for this purpose the arm or handle 6 ot the wrenchis provided with a slidably .mounted block 19 for engagement by the pinofthe rotary table (not shown) From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be observed that I have devised a pipe wrench otrelatively few parts, which is simple in operation and therefore free from liability when in use Itv will also be apparent that by means of the simple-expedient of pivotins the aws inthe manner shown wit-h the cooperating lugs 9 and 18 I have provided a construction by which an exceedingly powerful gripm'ay be applied to a pipe section, much after the mannerof a toggle, and that this gripping action is produced by the force necessarily applied to the wrench arm in screwing or unscrewing the pipe sections;
It will also be obvious that the present inas many changes and modifications may be of becoming disorganized made without departing from the spirit oi the invention; all such I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims;
lVhat I claim as ne Y and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. pipe wrench including a pair of in dependentsubstantially semicircular jaws, an arm to which one of said aws is directly pivoted, a link pivotally connected to the other jaw and to the arm, means :for detachahlj connecting the ends of said jaws remote from said arm, and cooperating means on said arm and one of said jaws to cause the jaws to grip a pipe as the arm is moved laterally.
2, A pipe wrench including a pair of independent substantially se1nicircular jaws, an arm to which one of said jaws is directly pivoted, a link pivot-ally connected to the other jaw and to the arm, means for detachahl connecting the ends of said jaws remote from said arm, and cooperating lugs on said link-connected jaw and said arin, whereby the jaws are caused to grip the )i )e as lateral force a) )lied to the arm. 25 i l 3. A pipe wrench including an arm terminating in av pair of spaced lugs, a pair of substantially semicircular independent jaws one of which is pivoted to one of said lugs, a link pivoted to the other of said jaws and lugs, means detacliahly connecting the tree ends of said jaws, and a lug on one of said jaws for cooperation with one of the lugs on said arm to cause the jaws to gri p a pipe as the arm is moved laterally.
at. A pipe wrench including an arm ter-- ininating' in a U-sliaped portion forming two lugs, a pair of substantially sealicircularjaws one of which is pivoted to one oil." said lugs, a linlt pivoted to the otllcr of said jaws and lugs, means for dotachalily connecting the free ends of said jaws, and a lu on one of said jaws and situated within said U' shaped portion of the arm, whereby when. the arnr is moved laterally one of its lugs will engage the hit on said jaw to cause the jaws to grip a pipe.
