a i o-M 1 A TTORNEYD UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIPE'I'ON'GS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Application flied February 7, 1921. Serial No. 443,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn A. LOWREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goose Creek, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful imgrovements in a pipe tong.
ne object of the invention is to provide a tong of the character described especially adapted to grip and rotate pipe sections, or other round articles, and which will engage the pipe so securely that it will not be liable to slip thereon.
Another object is to provide a tong which has sufficient range to enable it to gri pipe or tool joints of different sizes so t at as the tool joint wears down, as it will, the tong will still engage therewith'and turn the same.
A further feature resides in the provision of a tong that will work either way Without reversing the position of the same.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the tong and Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
Referrin now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 refers to the head whose operative end is arcuate and pivoted to this end of the head, one on each side, are the clamps 2, 2, whose free" ends may be secured together or released by the latch 3. These clamps are also arcuate, and secured to their inner faces are the arcuate j aws 4, 4, having the pipe engaging teeth 5, 5. The head has a lengthwise slot 6 cut therethrough, which flares inwardly, and a handle 7 is pivoted in the outer end of this slot.
An arcuate jaw 8 is seated in the arcuate recess of the head. The handle and the jaw 8 have the respective toggle levers 9 and 10, which are rigid therewith and which are plvoted together. These levers work in the slot 6.
In operation, the tong is latched around the pipe or tool joint member to be turned and the lever is manipulated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1-. This will operate through the toggle levers to force the jaw 8 into engagement with the pipe or tool joint, and the tooth 11 will bite into said object. Further force applied to the handle will cause allot the jaws to engage with the object to be turned and prevent the slip page of the tong thereon.
What I claim is 1. A tong including a head, clamps carried thereby and. adapted to be engaged around the object to be turned, a jaw, working independent of the clamps, a handle pivoted to the head and toggle levers connecting said handle with said jaw.
2. A tong, including a head, engaging means carried thereby and adapted to be clamped around the object to be turned, an engaging jaw, working independent of the engaging means, a handle pivoted to the head and toggle levers connecting the jaw and handle, through which said jaw may be forced into engagement with said object by the manipulation of the handle.
3. A tong, including a head, clamps pivoted thereto and adapted to be secured around an object to be turned, a jaw carried by the head, between said clamps, a handle pivoted to the head and toggle levers operatively connecting the handle and Jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. LOWVREY.
