WRENCH.
I Application filedjlriarch 30,'1927. Serial lie. 179,534.
The invention relates to vise-tongs, and
more particularly to the class of wrench Vises of the tongs type. V
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tool-of this character, wherein the gripping jaws for a piece of work, for ex-.
' ample a pipe, are readily and easily adjusted to initially receive the work and thereafter thesaid jaws can be minutely adjusted to firmly grip and hold the work, these jaws being a part of handle levers, which can be aligned with each other, so that the same can be engaged in a socket or a clamp of a fixed part, whereby the tool will serve as a vise fOIfillDlY and securely holding the work to be operated upon. I V
. Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character,wherein the jaws and the lever handles are arranged in a novel manner, so that the tool may be utilized as a wrench in the ordinarymanner or as a vise stationarily supported for firmly and securely clamping a piece of work to be operated upon, for exaiiipleto effect the threading of pipes orrother work.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein the jaws are connected sothat one jaw can be slidably adjusted relative to the other j aw and both jaws swung toward "or away from each other for clam )in i action the slidin aw being capaole of minute ad ustment to assure firm and secure biting engagement of both jaws with the work to be operated upon for the secure'holding thereof, when the tool is supported to serve as a viseandthus obviating the necessity of the removal of the tool from its support for the proper and accurate adjustment of the jaws relative to each other. A still further object of the invention is the provision ofa tool of this character, which is extremely simple iii-construction, strong, durable, thoroughly reliable and efficient,
adaptable for use as a wrench, vise-or tongs,
quick adjustable, and inexpensive to'inanufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodimentof the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
views in the drawing.-
' for a purpose presently described.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view 1 of a support, showing the tool constructed in i accordance with the invention engaged there infpr service as a vise for holding a piece of work. w
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation ofthetool. K, j Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 looking toward the opposite'side .of said tool."
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 44- of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters indicate cor responding parts throughout the several to assure proper leverage and are tapered'toward their free ends. The lever handle A is straight throughoutits extent, while the lever handle B has an outwardly bowed Formed on the lever handle A at the wider or outer end thereof is an offset substantially yokeshaped stationary jaw 6. and likewise formed on the wider end of the lever handle B is am'ovable jaw 7 relative to the jaw 6. v
end merging into the inner end of an outv a detail, at
portion 5 V wardly, directed forwardly curved'j aw 7 havf ingits outer end inset to extend over jaw 6 to opposeor confront the forward armor claw GXtCDSlOIl 9 of the ja'wfi, when the handle levers A and B are connected together in a I I manner presently described.
The inner face of the claw extension-9 and :the outer end of the jaw 7 are formed with serrated or toothed gripping surfaces 10.
The gripping faces oppose each other so that wh-enthe jaws are engaged with a piece of work, for example a pipeCth'e latter? will The forward end of the-movable jawis rectangular and the rear face of the forwardarm of thestationary jaw inclinesfr-earwa-rdly in,
opposite directions from the transverse.
median. V
The jaw 6 is formed with a relatively long fiat base orintermediate portion 11 provided with a longitudinally extending slot 12 for ac commodating a pivot bolt 13, theshank having a squared inner portion 14 shdably engaged in the slot 12and a rounded outer portion 15 engaging a correspondinglyshaped hole 16 formed in the inner end of the jaw 7 for pivotally and slidably connecting said jaw 7 with the jaw 6. The bolt at one end carries a threaded nut 17 and formed at its other endwith a head 18;
Formed on the inner endof the j aw 6 at the outer face thereof is a laterally extending boss-like internally threaded eye 19 in which is engaged an'adjusting screw 20, the inner end of which plays against the squared inner portion 1% of the boltv 13 engaged in the slot 12, so that on the adjustment of the screw 20 thebolt 13 can be positively shifted in one direction in the slot This screw 20 i is utilized to obtain minute adjustment between the jaws 6 and 7, which latter are capable of 7 qui k adjustment by their sliding and pivotal together to overlap each other, and with one yersely connection with each other. The outer end of the screw 20 has a wrench engaging head'21, so
that the same can be readily adjusted when occasion requires.
it will be readily apparent, in View of the cregoing description that the tool comprises same direction to mount a pivotal connection between'them, laterally spaced fromthe longitudinal line the bars and with theirends setback into thelongitudinal line or" the bars so as to provide opposing jaw laces transcross the line of the bars movable; upon the pivot to bring opposing thrusts in the line of the bars, as the latter are brought of the lateral oliset portions being longer than the other to provide the outer jaw andfurther slotted to permit of adjustment of he pivot so that the aws may be so placed that the thrust is exerted upon the work when the bars are overlapped througl'iout their length.
In one use of the tool the lever handles A and B are shifted to align with each other and the same are forced into a soclretQQ formed in a post or other support 23, sothat the tool will be fixedly held thereby, although it is to be understood that-such tool can be similarly engaged i-n a clamp or other character of support, the outwardly bowed portion otthe lever handle 13 being designed to act as a stop.
or abutment to limit the insertion of both lever handlesA and B when in al 'nment with each other in the said post, support or the like as Y we bars eachhaving end portionsotlset-in the will be apparent. When the tool is mounted i in the manner as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing it can be vutilized as a vise, the jaws 6 and 7 being initially adjusted to freely receive work therebetween and thereafter such jaws minutely adjusted relative to each other by the screw 29 to firmly and securely clamp the work in the tool to be operated upon.
ence in the operation of the screw'20, either by the worlr held by thetool or the tool itself. This is also true when the tool is used as a wrench, because the screw is exposed in a direction from the stationary aw 6 to be freelyengaged for minute adjustment of the movable jaw 7 as will be clearly apparent;
- From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the tool will be clearly understood therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
t is to be further understood that changes, variations and modifications may be made 111 the tool without departing from the spirit of the inventionor sacrificing any of its advantages WVhat is'claimed is 1 I A wrench comprising two bars, each having end portions offset in the same direction to mount a pivotal'connection between them, said offset portions laterally spaced from the longitudinal line of the bars and with their ends set back into the "longitudinal line of the bars to provide opposing jaw faces extending transversely across the line of the bars and movable on the pivot to bring opposing thrusts in the line of the bars, the latter are I brought together to overlap each other, one or" Said lateral offset portions being longer than the otherto provide the outerjawand slotted to permit ad ustu'lent of the pivot so that the ed upon the work when the bars are over lapped throughout their length.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature hereto.
aws may be so placed ti'atthe thrust is eXert-.
