Description
A. OLSON.
lNSlDE PIPE WRENCH.
APPLICATION 'HLED JULY 2,1920.
1,371,642. I Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYS ,UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN" OLSON, OF SAN rnnno, CALIFORNI I INSIDE PIPE-WRENCH.
To all whom-it may concern. f 7
Be it known'that I, ALLEN OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residingat San iication.
Pedro, in the county office Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Inside PipelVreuches, of which the following is a speci- This invention is a pipewrench' arranged to engage the end of a pipe between jaws abutting against the outside of the pipe, and extending within the pipe vso as to abut against the inside thereof, respectively.
It is the Object of the invention to provide a construction of this character extremcly simple in operation and of simplified and inexpensive construction.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench partly in longitudinal section showing the application thereof to the end of a pipe.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3+3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the inside jaw of the wrench.
The pipe which is to be engaged by the wrench is shown at 1. The wrench comprises a shank 2 having the inside jaw 3 extending longitudinally beyond the shank and eccentrically arranged relative to the longitudinal axis thereof, and the outside jaw 4: extending alongside jaw 3 and con-' centrically mounted :upon shank 2 so that the shank and the inside jaw may be rotated relative to the outside jaw. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the outside 'aw is positioned againsttheeouter surface of the pipe end with the inside jaw received within the pipe end and the shank is rotated, the eccentrically arranged inside jaw will be moved toward the outside jaw so as to firmly clamp the end of the pipe between said awsn Referring specifically to the practical embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings, the shank 2 is shown as having an end handle portion 5, a hexagonal portion 6 adapted to be engaged by a wrench or the like for turning the tool, a' cylindrical bearing portion 7 beyond the hexagonal portion 6, an enlarged cylindrical bearing portion 8 beyond bearing 7 arrangedto form an Specification of Letters Patent.

annular shoulder 9, and the jaw 3, preferably, of cylindrical conformation projecting longitudinally beyond the enlarged bearing 8 e;centrica ly to the longitudinal axis of the tool shank.
teeth 10 are, preferably, providlongitudinally of the jaw 23, said teeth being shown as received in V-shaped grooves outer end of the tooth is, preferably, angu-' larly arranged as shown at 14 so that the edge 15 of the jaw 3 at the sides of the tooth may be bent downwardly over the angularly arranged end of the tooth for retaining the latter within its groove.
The outer jaw 4 comprises asleeve 16 rotatably mounted upon bearings 7 and 8 with an interiorannular shoulder 17 provided in said sleeve abutting against shoulder 9 to prevent longitudinal displacement of the outer jaw in one direction. A collar 18 is fixed upon bearing 7 in rear of sleeve 16 as by a set screw 19 in order to prevent longitudinal displacement of said sleeve in the opposite direction. The jaw proper of the outer jaw is shown at 4 as projecting from sleeve 16 beyond bearing 8 and parallel to the jaw 3, the engaging surface 20 of said jaw being, preferably, transversely curved to conform approximately to the curvature of the pipe to be engaged by the tool.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an extremely simple construction forming a wrench adapted to have one of its jaws re ceived within the end of a pipe and its other jaw received over the outside of the pipe end, the parts being so arranged that when the shank of the wrench is rotated the inner jaw will be moved toward the outer jaw "for firmly clamping the pipe between said jaws.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Whatis claimed is:
1. A pipe wrench comprising jaws adapted to extend within, and to be received another to grip said pipe.
against the outside of apipe, and means for shifting the jaws laterally relative to one 2. A pipe wrench comprising jaws adapted to extend within and to be received a ainst the outside ofa pipe, and means for turning the inner aw so asto shlft the same laterally toward the'outer jaw for gripping said pipe.
to extend within, and to be received against the outside of a pipe, the inner being eccentrically rotatable'within the, outer jaw so that said jaws may be moved laterally toward one another for gripping said pipe.
4:. A pipe wrench comprising jaws adapted;
to extend within, and to be received against the outside of a pipe, means for shift ng the 7 aws laterally relatlve to one another to grip said pipe, and jaw teeth extending lengthwise of said jaws for contact with said 5. Apipe wrench comprising a shank, a
3. A pipe wrench comprising jaws adapted collar rotatably mounted on the end of said shank, an arcnate jaw extending from one side of said collaroutwardly from the end of said shank, and a jaw projecting from the end of said shank, which last mentioned' jaw is eccentrically arranged with respect to the axis of saidshank, and oppositely disposed with respectlto the arcuate i 6. A pipe wrench comprising a shank, a collar rotatably mounted on the-end of said shank, an arcuate jaw extending from one side of-said collar outwardly from,-theen'd of said shank, 'a aw pro ecting from the end A LLE N oLsoN.
