UNITED STATES WILIORD H. NEWLAND, OF INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTABLE PIPE-BENDING TOOL.
Application filed August 29, 1927. Serial No. 216,186.
The present invention relates to a pipe bending tool, and has for its prime object to providea structure which is adjustable to fit various size pipes so that said pipes may be easily and conveniently bent.
Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of a tool of this nature which is simple in its construction, strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to. manipulate, thoroughly efficient and reliable in, use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention r sides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 7
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a tool e1nbodying the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation thereof at right angles to that shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes an elongated tube, the upper end of which is threaded as at 6. The lower end of the tube terminates in a hook shaped extension forming the jaw 7. An opening 8 is provided in the bottom end of the tube 5. An elongated shank 9 has a cap 10 formed at one end and a ball 11 formed at the other end, the ball end 11 is inserted through the upper end of the tube and the cap 10 is threadedly engaged with the threaded end 6. A movable jaw 12 has a socket 13 formed thereon which may be slipped over the ball 11 and then a plate 14 may be placed in the opening 10 and secured by means of screws 15 so as to maintain the socket and ball together. Obviously the jaw 12 may be adjusted in respect to the jaw 7 by means of rotating the cap 10, thereby moving the shank 9 longitudinally in the tube 5. The movable jaw 12 is free to rock to a certain extent which is desirable in bending pipe and the like. This jaw 12 is provided with an arcuate engaging face 16 having a channel 1? therein and longitudinally thereof.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that the jaws may be adjusted with respect to each other to fit the particular diameter of the pipe and then the pipe may be readily bent and the jaw 12 will rock to a certain extent during the bending oper ation and the pipe may efiiciently bend be cause of the arcuate engaging face 16.
It is thought that the construction, utility, operation, and advantages of this invention will now be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
Changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement ofparts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as here inafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a tool of the class described, a tube having one end terminating in a hook eX- tension forming a fixed jaw, a shank slidable in the tube and having one end. adjacent the jaw formed with a ball, a movable jaw formed with a socket to slip over the ball, said end of the tube being formed with an opening so that the socket may be slipped over the ball, a plate for closing said opening to prevent the socket from disengaging with the ball, and means for holding the plate in place. I
2. In a tool of the class described, a tube having one end terminating in a hook extension forming a fixed aw, a shank slidable in the tube and having one end adjacent the jaw formed with a ball, a movable jaw formed with a socket to slip over the ball, said end of the tube being formed with an opening so that the socket may be slipped over the ball, a plate for closing said opening to prevent the socket from disengaging with the bal means for holding the plate in place, the other end of the shank being formedwith a cap threadedly engaged with the other end of the tube so that the shank may be adjusted in the tube for adjusting the distance between the jaws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILFORD H. NEWLAND.
