POLISH ROD GRIP I Filed May 18, 1935 INVENTOR Patented Apr. 7, 1936 PATENT oFFmE POLISH ROD GRIP Merton T. Archer, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to The National-Superior Company, Toledo, Ohio, a corporation of Delaware Application May 18, 1933, Serial No. 671,637
9 Claims.
This invention relates to grips or clamps for connecting the pump or polish rods to their operating means.
One object of the invention is to provide a compound lever system arranged to effect an efficient non-slipping connection between the polish rod and the grip.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2-2 on Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, an end view of the invention, showing the latch opened in dotted lines.
On the drawing, I designates the base or body member of the grip and 2 indicates the cap member hingedly connected to the base member by the hinge-pin 3 in the base member and in the hinge-ears 4 carried by the cap member.
Links 5 and 6 are pivotally attached to the base member at the side opposite the hinge-ears 4 by the pin I. The upper end of the link 5 has the pivot pin 8 lying transversely of the pivot pin I. A lever 9 is pivoted at one end on the pin 8 and has its remaining end lying above the upper end of the link 6. The central part of the lever lies on the forwardly projecting-lug II] on the front of the cap member 2. The upper end of the link 6 has the upstanding threaded stud II which extends up through the lever 9 and carries the nut I2 adapted to be screwed down against the lever 9.
The upper side of the base member I has the longitudinal groove I3 directly below the corresponding groove I4 of the cap member 2. On the under side of the cap member 2 is a portion of a polish rod I5 lying in the two grooves, as shown in Fig. 3. The grooves are suificiently shallow to prevent the members I and 2 from engaging each other on their opposing faces, so" that the members I and 2 will firmly engage the polish rod when the latch member comprising the links 5 and 6 and the lever 9 has its lever 9 forced down on the lug II].
In order to release the polish rod from the grip, it is only necessary to loosen the nut I2 and then swing the latch forwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, whereupon the cap. or gate member 2 can be lifted torelease the polish rod.
A spring I6 surrounds the bolt II between the lever 9 and the link 6 to release the lever from the lug II] when the nut I2 is loosened.
This structure discloses a true compound lever system of the second order wherein the cap member 2 forms the first lever whose fulcrum is intermediate of its ends and on the rod I5. The hinge-pin 3 provides the point of application of one force to the first lever and the projecting lug It provides the point of application of the other force, each being on opposite sides of the fulcrum of the cap member. The second lever 9 is pivoted on the pin 8 which represents the point of application of the fixed forces and the opposite or free end of the lever 9 is the point of application ofthe variable forces which are provided by screwing the nut I2 down against the lever. The fulcrum point of this lever is intermediate of its ends and is arranged to engage the lug ID of the first lever.
I claim:- 1. In a rod gripping device, the combination of a member having a groove on its face arranged to receive a rod, compound lever means including two levers, the first lever'being hingedly connected to the member at one side thereof and arranged to bear against a rod in said groove, the second lever operatively connected at one endwith the other side of the member and having its intermediate portion fulcrumed on the free end of the first lever, and means operatively connected to the member and the free end of the second lever for forcing its intermediate portion against the free end of the first lever. 25
2. In a rod gripping device, the combination of a body member, a capmember hingedly connected at one side to the body member, said members being provided with mating grooves to receive the rod, a pair of links hinged at one end to the other side of the body member, a lever pivotally connected at one of its ends to one of said links, and means carried by the other link and arranged to engage the free end of the lever to force the latter against the cap member and thus clamp the base member and cap member together.
3. In a rod gripping device, the combination of a body member, a cap member hingedly connected at one side to the body member, said members being provided with mating grooves to receive the rod, a pair of links hinged at one end to the other side of the body member, a lever pivotally con nected at one of its ends to one of said links and having a bifurcated free end arranged to straddle the other link, and means carried by said other link and arranged to engage said lever to force the latter against the cap member and thus clamp the latter to the body member.
4. In a rod gripping device, the combination of a body member grooved to receive the rod, a cap member having a groove arranged to mate with the groove of the body member and pivotally connected at one side of the groove to the body member, a pair of parallel links hinged at one end to the other side of the body member, the cap mem- 55 ber having a laterally projecting portion which is straddled by said links when the cap is swung into its closed relation to the body member, a lever pivotally connected to one of said links and arranged to be swung into position. to bear on said protruding end of the cap, and means adjustable on the other link member and arranged to bear on the free end of said lever to clamp the body and cap members together.
5. In a rod gripping device, the combination of a body member, a cap member hingedly connected to the body member at one side, said members being provided with mating grooves to receive the rod, said cap member having a lug on its other side, a pair of links hinged at one end to the body member and arranged to straddle the lug when the cap member is in its closed position, a lever pivotally connected at one of its ends to one of said links, and means carried by the other link and arranged to engage the free end of the lever to force the latter against the lug and thus clamp the body member and the cap member together.
