Description
E. I. HOFFMAN HANGER SUPPQRT:
APPLICATION FILED MAY 20. 1921.

HANGER SUPLPORT.
Application filed May 20,
To all fr0/tom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, EDGAR J. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherokee, in the county o1C Cherokee and State of lowa, have invented a new and use- :Full Hanger Support, oi which the 'following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to a tool. especially designed for supporting cable hangers, while j the same are being applied to I beams or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which will grip the upper portion ot a flange of an l beam, while the ends of the hanger are being bent therearound.
A further object of the invention is the provision oi a tool of this character which maybe adjusted to permit the use of the device in connection with l' beams having flanges of various; thicknesses.
With the toregoing'and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parte and in the details oi" construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment Aof the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring` to the drawing:-
Figure l is a side elevational View of a tool constructed in accordance with the pres ent invention, and showing the same as applied to an l beam.
Figure 2 is a iront elevational view of the tool. i
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes a pair oi spaced curved arms Ii which have their lowerl extremities conW nected by means of the 'transverse bar 6, which is secured to the curved arms as b v means of the boltsI 7 which 'pass through threaded openings in the arms and bar.
Formed in the arms 5 adjacent to the upper tree ends thereof are suitable openings to accommodate the set screws 8 which are adjustable through the arms to adapt the tool for use with' beams having flanges of various thicknesses.
Having connection with the arms 5 are the 1921. Serial No. 471,218.
movable jaws 9 which have their upper ends serrated as at l0 to bite into the hanger to be positioned, to force the same into engagement ywith the -beam to which the hanger is to be applied. A bolt indicated at l0 passes through suitable openings in the jaws and arms to pivotally connect the jaws to the arms, there being provided a handle il formed integral with the jaws for operating the jaws to move the same to positions as illustrated by Figure 1 of the drawing, where the jaws are disclosed as forcing the hanger which in the present drawing is indicated at l2, into engagement with the lower edge of the I beam.
In the use of the device, a hanger to be applied is positioned on the jaws 9, the arms 5 being moved over the upper portion ot' the lower flange of an Lbeam to which the hanger is to be applied, and the handle 1l is operated to force the hanger into engagement with the Lbeam. It will be seen that with the hanger supported in this position the ends of the hanger may be readily and easily bent over the lower flange of the beam to secure the hanger thereto.
A hook member 13 is Jformed at one end of the handle 11, the hook member being especially designed 'for prying the hook from the beam, should it be found necessary to remove the same.
It might be further stated that while I have shown and described adjusting screws for adapting the device for use in connection with l beams of various thicknesses, it is to be understood that the adjustment may be accomplished by providing an adjustable handle 11.
What is claimed as new is l. A4, tool of the class described comprising curved arms, jaws having pivotal. connection with the arms, a handle having connection with the j aws, and a'djustiinemeans disposed adjacent to the free ends of the arms.
2. A. tool of the class described comprising curved arms, a bar ttor connecting; the arms` jaws positioned between the arms and hav ing serrated surfaces extending above the upper edges of the arms adjacent to the jaws, a handle for operating' the jaws, and adjusting means positioned adjacent to the free ends of the arms.
3. ln a tool of the class described, Curved arms, means im connecting the curved arms, ne my own, IV have hereto aiiixed my signa- :Ln adjustable opera-ting handle having contui'e in the presence of two Witnesses. nection With the curved arms and ad'ustin means carried by the arms sind adallted t EDGAR JEROME HOFFMAN' Contact with aV beam for securing the tool fitnessesz to a beam. S. L. BARNES,
In testimony that I` claim the foregoing LUGETTA FRESHWATER.
