T. J. FEGLEY AUXILIARY HANDLE FOR WRENCHES Fiied March 25, 1922 I Patented Mar. 23, 1926.

mnoms J. FEGLEY, or rnrnsnnnrnm, mmrsnvanm; assrenoa r Non'rn 330's :n'r'a 00., or rmannrrnu, PENNSYLVANIA, aconromrron or ramwsn- VANIA.
AUXILIARY HANDLE FOB WBENGHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. FEGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Auxiliary Handles for Wrenches, of which. the following is a specification.
The object of my inventionis to provide an auxiliary handle, which can be attached to the handle of .a wrench whensaid handle is used as an extension member-of a socket wrench. 1 The liandle illustrated in the draw.- ings is fully described and claimed in an application for patent for-a socket wrench 1 filled by George 0.. Leopold on the tenth day of March, 1922, under Serial No. 542,--
In the accompanying drawings:
A a Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing my improved auxiliary handle/applied to the handle of a socket Wrench; I
Fig. 2is a view showing the handle attached to a socket member of a wrench;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the auxiliary handle, the section being on the line 3 -3, Fig. 4, with the handle in elevation;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line l-+4, Fig. 3; v
Fig. 5 is asectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 3; and
of the hub of the auxiliary handle. Referring tothe drawings, 1 is the handle of a-socket wrench, such as set forth in the above mentioned application for patent. This handle is rectangular in cross section and has a reduced end 2 with spring-pressed balls 3 therein, which are arranged to enter a recess in the walls of an opening in the socket member. The other end of the handle has an angular extension 2*, shaped as shown in Fig. 2,-so that it will enter a recess a 4 in a socket member 5. In the extension 2 are spring-pressed balls 6, shown clearly in Fig. 4,'which enter recesses 7 in the socket I member. These balls act as pivots for the handle so that the handle can be moved to a limited extent in the recess. This contion for patent hereinbefore referred --to.
In some instances,-it is desirable to (use the wrench handle 1 as an extension memend 2 is placed-in .a recess in a socket and *Fig. 6 is a detached view, in elevation,
structionis fully described in the applica-. I
ber of a socket wrench. In this cas'e,'thein order to turn the handle 'withforce, the. "auxiliary handle, forming the subject. of this invention, is applied tot-he end of the handle having shown in Fig. 1.
8 is a hub forming part of the auxiliary handle; This hub has a rectangular socket the. angular extension, as i 9, open at one side, as at 10. ,The angular end of the handle is passed into the socket and turned so that the extension 2 will project through theside opening 10, as clearly shown in Fi 3, the parts bein so proporticned that t e surface 11 of t e extension 2*.will bear against the surface 12 of the hub member 8.
13 are balls located in an opening in the end of the handle 1. Back of these balls is a spring 14, which tends to force the balls out into grooves 15 in the wallsof the socket 9 of the hub so as to retain the handle firmly in the socket. As the balls are ield-.
'- ingly mounted in the socket, the hand e can i be withdrawn by force. 1
In the upper portion of the hub 8 is a transverse opening 16 through which extends a cross bar 17 This bar has a groove 18 at the center and grooves 19 near each end. At the grooves aredepressions 20 to. receive a ball 21, which is located in a socket 22 inthe-hub 8. Back of the ball'21 is a spring 23, which tends to force the ball against the cross bar 17. When the ball is in one of the recesses of the cross bar, the bar is yieldingly held. imposition.
It will be seen by the-above construction .that, when it is desired to use the handle .as a straight extension for a socket, the hub of the auxiliary handle can be attached to the angular end of the handle- 1 and the socket member can be turned by the cross bar of. the hub-,-'the balls yieldingly holdin the handle in the hub and the-balls 3 yiel inglv holding the socket to the end of the I .the an ular end is inserted in the recess in" the soc et member, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
I claim: i. 1.,The combination-with'a handle having an angularly dis with an inclined ace,-of an auxiliary handle comprising a hub provided with a socket osed extremity provided for mounting on said handle, the wan of said socket having'a side opening to accommodate the angularly disposed extremity of the handle, there belng an inclined bearing.
carried by the auxiliary handle and cooper ating with the inclined face of the extrem ity of'the handle whereby to maintain the parts in alignment. c J
2. lhe combination with a handle having an angulai'ly disposed extremity provided With an inclined face, of an'auxiliary handle comprising a hub provided with a socket for mounting on said handle, the "Wall of said socket having a side opening to accommodate the angularly disposed extremity of the handle, thewall of said side opening being lnclined to provide a hearing to coopei'ate with the inolinedztace of the extremity of 1 in alignment,
the handle WhG'IBby tO maintain the parts i clined surface of the/handle, said handle having a transverse openingghalls located in the opening; and a spring between the halls, the walls of the socket in the hub of the auxiliary handle having grooves to 1'8- ceive the balls.
