TOOL CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVAL'rnR I. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Tool Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tool construction, and more particularly to construction for tools such as wrenches and the like. One of the objects thereof is to provide a wrench which is strong and durable, and well adapted to meet the conditions of hard practical use. Another object is to provide a construction of the abovenature which is simply and inexpensively made. Other objects will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts as will be exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter set forth and thescope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now to the drawing in detail. there is shown a nut-engaging member 10 which may be of any desired form and shape, and which in this instance takes the form of a hexagonal socket adapted to engage and turn a nut. The socket 10 may be closed at its upper end as shown at 11 in Figs. 1 and 2, or may be left open or extended upwardly to provide another socket, as, for example, one
of a different size, as shown at 18 in Fig. 4.
Passing through the hollow socket member 10 is a handle member 12 which preferably takes the form of a cylindrical rod, as T .sll wn- Th handle 12 passes through an opening 13 in one side of the socket 10, the opening 18 being preferably of a size and shape adapted to provide a snug fit for the handle 12 therein. The end of the cylindrical handle 12 is provided with a squared or flattened portion 13 which fits snugly into an opening 15 in the side of the socket 1O oppoabout the opening 15 and thus limits the movement of the handle 12 thereinto. The shoulder may be shaped as at 16 to conform to the inner surface of the socket 10 and thus provide a large abutting surface if in contact, or ample clearance for a tight joint at the end if out of engagement. The shape of the end 1 1 of the handle 12 before being riveted in place is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. When the end 14 of the handle has been riveted down, it is preferably rounded to conform to the general exterior contour of the socket 10 and is polished OK to present a smooth, even joint.
It will thus be seen that there is provided, as described above, a wrench which is simply and inexpensively constructed and assembled, and in which there are embodied features of strength and rigidity adapted to render it capable of successfully withstanding the conditions of hardest practical use.
As various possible embodiments may be made of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiment herein set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim as my invention:
1. In tool construction, in combination, a member adapted to engage and turn a nut, said member having a hollow part; and a cylindrical handle member passing freely through an opening in one side of said 1101- r low part and having a flattened end riveted into an opening in the side of said hollow part opposite said first opening, and having a shoulder abutting the interior surface of said hollow part about said last opening to limit the movement of said handle thereinto. der formed by said reduction in diameter 10 2.
