RELEOVABLE BOLT HEAD.
Application filed October 29, 1923, SerialNo. 671,618, and in Great Britain November 25, 1922.
In some restricted places it is inconvenient and sometimes impossible to apply or remove the usual screw-threaded nut to a bolt or bar by rotating either of these members.
To obviate this drawback, according to the invention the bolt or bar is provided at one end with a lug or projection and the usual screw-threaded nut is replaced by a removable bolt head in the form of a box shaped member which is adapted to slide over the projection and is then moved in a direction at right angles to the length of the bolt, so that the projection fits into an aperture or recess provided in one face of the head.
A cotter or filling piece is then inserted between the bolt and the side of the head opposite to the recess and retains the projection in the recess.
The cotter may be secured in position by a split pin or other well-known device.
In the accompanying drawing which represents examples of bolt or bar heads according to the invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective veiw of the parts assembled Fig. 2 is a similar view of the separate parts;
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the assembled parts;
t and 5 are, respectively, a plan and elevation of the assembled parts of a slightly .inodified construction, and
Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of the modified construction.
Similar parts are denoted by the same reference letters in all the figures.
A represents a bolt, bar or the like, provided at one end with a transverse projection a at right angles to its length.
B is a box shaped member with a large opening in the front side and is adapted to slide over the projection a on the bar A and then to be moved downwards so that the projection a fits in a transverse aperture 7) provided in the top of the member B. A cotter C is inserted through a transverse aperture 7) provided at the lower part of the rear side of the box B and bears against the under surface of the bar A in order to maintain the projection a in the aperture 6. The head 0 of the cotter bears against the rear end of the box B.
A pin D inserted in holes provided in lugs E integral with the member B retains the cotter O in position.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 1-6, the box member B is formed as in the preceding construction except that the lugs are omitted and the cotter or filling piece C is inserted in an aperture 7 provided in the side of the box B and is held in position by the pin D passing through a hole in the projecting end of the cotter and bearing against the opposite side of the box B.
Having thus described the nature of our said invention and the best means we know of carrying the same into practical effect, we claim:-
1. A removable head for a bolt comprising a box-shaped member, a recess formed in one face of said box-shaped member, a projection formed at one end of said bolt, said projection being adapted to fit into said recess, an aperture extending through said box-shaped member, and a cotter inserted through said aperture and adapted to bear against said bolt in order to retain said projection in said recess.
2. A removable head for a bolt comprising a box-shaped member, a recess formed in one face of said box-shaped member, a projection formed at one end of said bolt, said projection being adapted to fit into said recess, an aperture extending through said box-shaped member, a cotter inserted through said aperture, and adapted to bear against the said bolt in order to retain said projection in said recess, and a head on said cotter bearing against the rear end of said box-shaped member.
3. A removable head for a bolt comprising a box-shaped member, a recess formed in one face of said box-shaped member, a projection formed at one end of said bolt, said projection being adapted to fit into said r eess, an aperture extending through said box-shaped member, a cotter inserted through said aperture, a head on said cotter bearing against the rear end of said boxshaped member, and a pin for locking said cotter.
In testimony whereof we have signed our
