Description
A. NEM.
WRENCH eft Wed,
Patented Mar. 23, j l926.
UNITED ALBERT NEAL, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA.
WRENCH.'
Application led March 14, 1925. faexial No. 15,700.
To all whom 'it may consacra:
Be it known that I, ALBERT NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing4 at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of indiana, have invented` certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenche-s, ot"
which theY following is a specification.
My said invention relates to a wrench andit is an object thereof to provide a device of this character which may be quickly and easily applied to a nut or bolt and quickly and easily released therefrom by a movement in the normal 'direction for turning the nut or bolt. j
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereoil and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a plan ot' my device,
Figure 2, a longitudinal central section thereof,
Figure 3, a viewot the various parts in position for assembling,
Figure 4, a view showing the jaws in one extreme position of movement, and
Figuie 5, a view showing the jaws in the opposite extreme position.
In the drawings reference character indicates a handle having fixed thereto, in any convenient manner, a pair of forks 11 and 12. Inthe present embodiment of the invention pins 13 are shown as extending through the handle and the forks 11 and 12. A pivot pin 14 extends through the `forks in the longitudinal axis ot the handle and is supported by said forks. Relatively movable jaws 15 and 16 have openings to receive a pivot pin 14, the jaw 15 having a slot at 17 in which a bloclc18 is slidably movable, the slot being somewhat longer than the block to provide a limited opportunity 'for movement of the jaw in the direction of the length oi the slot.
The jaw 16 has a circular opening 19 to receive an eccentric or bearing element 2() in the form of a circle disposed on the inner face of the fork 12 and extending out beyond the face thereof, said eccentric 2O having an opening through which the pin 14 passes. A pin 26 serves to secure the eccentric against movement about the pin 14.
' Guiding means are provided on the respective jaws, said means comprising opposed ledges 21 and 22 on each jaw between which a reduced portion 23 onthe other jawisY slidably engaged. These parts are similar on opposite sides Iof kthe wrenchv as will be understoodflfrom the drawings and insure proper relative positions of the respective jaws. The movable jaws are also reduced' in thickness at each side Aas will be seen in Fig, 2 -at so as to provideledges overhanging therounded ends of forks 11 and 12. These ledges in thefextreme positions of the'jaws rest against the flat `sides-of said forks 4andlimit their vsw.in,g ,ing
movement about pivot 14.
The operation of the `wrench will be obvious upon consideration of the three positions shown in Figures 1, 4 and 5. The wrench may be turned to the position of Fig. 4 to open the jaws widely, after which by turning the handle in a counterclockwise direction, the aws being in engagement with an object to be turned such as a nut or bolt, the enforced rotation of 'the eccentric or bearing-element due to its connection with fork 12 will move aw 16 toward aw 15 into the position shown in Fig. 1 and further movement of the handle in the same direction will move the jaw 16 further toward the jaw 15 into the extreme Vposition of Fig. 5 when the jaws are brought as close together as possible with the construction illustrated. Turning the handle in a clockwise direction will new force the jaw 16 away from the jaw 15 successively into the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
` It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit ot the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only inticated yin the appended claims.
' Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. VA wrench comprising a bii'iurcated handle, a pair of jaws between the forks of the handle, Li-connection between one oi said jaws vand the adjacent fork of the handle comprising a bearing element in the form of a circle on one of the members, an opening in the form ot a circle in the other of' the members for thepreception oi the circular bearing element, the other of said jaws having a slot, and a pin arranged eccentrically ot said circular bearing elenient and extending through the slot in the last mentioned jaw, substantially as set forth. v
2. A wrench Comprising a bifureated handle, a pair of jaws between the'forks ot' the handle, one of said jaws having an opening and the other jaw having a slot, a pin connecting said jaws, a. circular bearing eleinent mounted eecenti'ieally of Vsaid pin and secured on the inner face of one of said forks said bearing ele-nient fitting iii the opening in one of said jaws, and a block on said pin slidable in the slot in the other jaw, substantially as set forth.
3. A wizeneh comprising a handle, a pair of forks on said handle, a circular bearing Y element niounted on one side of a `foi-lr and angles from and mounted eccentrieally of said circular bea-ring element in the longitudinal axis of said handle on the side of 'theAv bearing element reinote from said handle, and a second jaw having a loiigitndinally disposed slot for the reception of said pin whereby when the` handle is rotated with the Circular bearin eleinent turning in one jaw the pin mounted eccentrioally of the bearing eleinent will be moved transversely of said jaw and will carry the second jaw thereby causing the jaws to inove toward and from each other, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set iny hand and seal at Indianapolis, indiana `this 12th day of March, A.' D. nineteen hundred and twentyefive.
ALBERT NEAL. [L 5.]
