An object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character which may be more quickly and more easily adjusted than is possible with wrenches of ordinary lconstruction.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character, which, when adjusted, positively retains its adjusted position "until it is released therefrom by the operator.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character which is especially easy to adjust.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character which is strong, compact, comparatively simple of construction, comparatively inexpensive, and thoroughly eiiicient.
Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter and in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which supplement this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation View of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved wrench. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the middle of the wrench, the section being taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation view of the stationary jaw and inner handle member, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the movable jaw and intermediate handle member.
Referring to these drawings, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts, throughout the several views: the wrench consists of the main frame or base member 10, the movable jaw member 11, outer handle member 12, the limiting pin 13 and the screw bolt 14.
The main base member is formed integrally with the inner handle member 15, this handle member being provided with two oppositely disposed series of laterally exber.

A slot 20 extends from one end portion toward the medial `portion. of the element 15, and through this Vslot extends the limiting pin or` stop member 13, which also extends through opposite apertures 21 of the intermediate handle mem- AThis handle member may be either formed integrally with or fixedly securedto the movable jaw 22, the latter being apertured at 23, for receiving the inner handle member and being adapted to slide thereon. The intermediate handle member consists of two parallel bars or slides on which the ribs 19 are formed, said ribs being snugly and slidably fitted within the grooves 18,
.while the'convexed surfaces 25 of said bars overlap the plane surfaces 24 and have slidi ing movement thereon.
A centrally apertured bridge element 2G unites two adjacent end portions of the parallel bars, so that a yoke is formed by said bridge element and said parallel bars. At the junction of this yoke with the movable jaw element 22 is formed a boss 27, provided with shoulders 28; while the handle member 12 is formed with a recess 28', which is enlarged at 29, and this enlargement of the recess is inclosed by a longitudinally extending flange 30 having a thickened portion 31 with shoulders 32 formed at its ends. An aperture 33 extends through the free end of the handle member 12 and communicates with the recess 28', and is adapted toreceive the screw bolt 14 which also extends through the central aperture of the element 26 and is provided with a nut with which it coacts for holding the inter'- mediate handle member against longitudinal movement in the outer handle member. The shoulders 32 are adapted to coact with the shoulders 28, so that the rotation of the handle member 12 is limited to approximately ninety degrees. Y
The inner wall of the hollow handle member 12 is provided with twok opposite series of spaced, parallel and laterally disposed ribs 34, which may be slightly inclined to the length of the handle members, or else, these ribs and the ribs 16 may be convergent at one of their respective ends, so that they may be forced into engagement with one another, or into intermeshing relation by the limited rotation of the handle member n l2, as described in the foregoing.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that when the ribs 34 are in mesh with the ribs 16, the jaw members 22 and 22 are locked j in fixed relation with each other; but when the said ribs are out'of mesh, the inner handle member may be easily slid in either direction with relation to the intermediate handlelmember and outer handle member, and Ywhen the proper adjustment has been obtained, it is only necessary, in order to y againvlock them in fixed relation, to rotate 'the handle l2 until the ribs thereof mesh with `the ribsof Vtherrinner handle member. It will be seen that thepin 13 extends Y through the slot 20, for limiting the distance .to which the jaws may be separated.
In order that the handle member'12 may be secured in its intermeshed relation with theinner handle member, while'the wrench is 'being used, I Vmay' provide any suitable Copies of this patent may be obtained for securing means, such, for instance, as a resilient latch plate 36 'having a depression 35 formed therewith for engaging the boss 37 in thev yoke or inner handle member.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a device of this character which is fully capable of attaining the forefaces thereof, a movable jaw mounted on said shank portion and having extensions slidably mounted in the aforementioned grooves, a handle rotatably mounted on said movable jaw, means for swivelly connecting the said handle to the said extensions,
and means for normally preventing the handle from rotating.
