or longitudinal cutting edges and rigidly attached at one end to a co-axial or co-eX- tensivc handle provided with fiat SlflGS which are disposed in planes substantially parallel with the plane of the blade. In the use of these paring knives it is necessary to maintain the blade substantially parallel with the work and in order to do so, the users hand has to be bent at the wrist in such manner as to cause considerable discomfort and even soreness and pain.
It is accordingly, an object of the present invention to provide a paring knife with a handle, the flat sides of which are disposed in laterally inclined planes or planes which are oblique in a lateral direction to the plane of the blade whereby, when the handle is gripped in a natural manner, the blade will be properly presented to the work without requiring bending of the hand at the wrist and thereby overcoming the above objection.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention better understood and the same consists in the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the views:
Figure l is a side elevational view of a paring knife constructed in accordance with' the present invention, and
Figure 2 is an end elevational view thereof looking toward the right of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates the usual flat blade that is preferably pointed at its outer end as at 6 by merging the back edge of the blade with the front or longitudinal cutting ed e 7 thereof, which pointed formation will facilitate cleaning of the eyes of potatoes and. the like,
Fixed to the inner end of the blade 5 is a handle 8 that may be of any suitable specific construction and which is co-axial or co-extensive with the blade 5 and is provided with flat side portions as at 9. In accordance with the present invention, the handle 8 is attached to the blade 5 so that the flat sides 9 of said handle are laterally inclined relative to the blade 5 as shown more clearly in Figure 2, or, so that said flat side portions 9 are disposed in longitudinal oblique planes vith respect to the plane of the blade 5. By
disposing the handle in this manner relative to the blade, the latter will be properly presented parallel to the work when the handle in gripped in, a natural manner by the user. Thus, the present knife may be employed for a long period with increased efficiency and without fatigue or discomfort to the user and the construction presented involves no additional construction or expense in the manufacture of the knife.
In the form of the invention shown, the handle 8 is attached by riveting the same upon a shank 10 that is integral with the blade 5 and extendswith the handle. Other modes of attaching the handle or construct ing the same may obviously, however, be re sorted tovwithout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
hat I claim as new is:
1. A paring knife including a substantially flat blade, and a handle attached to one end of the blade and having its longitudinal median dimension out of alinement' with the median longitudinal dimension of the blade, said median longitudinal dimensions being disposed in parallelism, said handle having a pair of parallel plain flat sides which lie at an acute angle to the plane of the blade, being thereby so positioned to prevent cramp in the hand of the user while using the paring knife.
2. A paring knife including an elongated substantially flat blade, and a handle attached to one end of the blade andprovided with a pair of parallel plainflat sides which lie at an acute angle to the plane of the blade so as to be positioned to prevent cramp in the hand of the user while using the device.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FAY HALL.
