Description

S. J. KILLINGSWORTH CHIMNEY HOLDER Filed Sept. 17 1924 Patented Mar. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL J. KILLINGSWOBTH, F BREWTON, ALABAMA.
CHIMNEY HOLDER.
Application filed September 17, 1924. Serial No. 738,210.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. KiLLiNeswonTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brewton, in the county of Escambiaand State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Holders, of which the following is a speeification.
This invention relates to a chimney support for lamps.
The primary object of the invention is to so support the chimney that the burner may be lighted or extinguished without removing the chimney from its holder. I
The invention further comprehends means for hingedly connecting the chimney support with the burner so that the chimney and its support may be turned about the pivot for access to the burner in lighting and extinguishing.
A further object of the invention is to provide yieldable means for holding the chimney in its support to thereby prevent breakage or chipping of the chimney when the lantern undergoes rough usage.
More specifically the invention comprises a spring hinged for supporting the chimney holder which normally urges the chimney in its closed position.
Further objects of theinvention will be apparent from a reading of the detailed de scription following when taken in conjunction with the drawing attached hereto and forming a part hereof in which,
Figure 1 discloses a perspective view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a view of the chimney holder and chimney in its inoperative or open position, and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1 disclosing the construction of thechinmey holder and the spring hinge therefor.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, 1 designates a burner support which is secured to the lamp in any well known manner. 2, 3 and 4 are upwardly projecting fingers constituting spring catches as will be hereinafter described. 5 is a part of a hinge connected at its inner end with said support 1. 6 is the chimney holder of circular formation made from sheet material on which the lower dges of the chimney are adapted to rest.
The part 5 is hingedly connected to the chimney support as at 7.
The chimney support is provided with shoulders at spaced intervals around its circumference as indicated by reference numerals 8 and 9 vith which the spring catches 2, 3 and 4 are adapted to cooperate to hold the chimney in its upright operative position against the tension of the spring hinge hereinafter described.
An important feature of the invention resides in the chimney retaining rings 10 and 11 which are connected together by suitable spring material 12 so that the upper ring 11 is normally urged downwardly with the result that the chimney is forced to always tightly engage its support 6. The upper ring 11 may be provided with a suitable covering 13 to prevent scratching of the glass of which the chimney is made.
The lower chimney ring 1 is made from wire material and if desired the springs 12 connecting the rings may be made from the same wire material which constitutes the lower ring 10. This lower ring 10 is, as stated before, made of wire material and a portion thereof is bent upon itself as shown by reference numeral 14, and such bent portion passes down around the hinge joint 7 with its extremity engaging the underside of the support 1 to thereby provide spring material for the hinge having the normal tendency of forcing the chimney support in its upright operative position.
It will also be observed that the chimney holder 6 is provided with integral upstanding elements adapted to secure the lower chimney ring in a definite spaced relation with respect to the chimney holder 6. To this end the upper parts of said upstanding elements are turned as at 15 to secure the wire chimney retaining ring as clearly disclosed in the drawing.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a burner having a support, and a chimney holder hingedly secured to said support for permitting a swinging movement of said chimney holder and himney to exp s th burne pper and lower rings for engaging said chimney, and yieldable means connecting said rings to urge the upper ring and chimney downwardly into tight engagement with the chimney holder, and means for securing said chimney holder to said burner support when the chimney holder is in its operative upright position.
2. The combination with a burner support, and a chimney holder, means for hingedly connecting the holder to said support to permit a swinging movement of the chimney holder, a chimney engagement ring for engaging the lower portion of the chimney, said ring being bent intermediate its end to constitute one of the hinge members connecting the chimney holder and the burner support, an upper ring for engaging the upper,
portion of the chimney support, a resilient spring integral with said lower ring and engaging said upper ring to urge it downwardly to thereby maintain the chimney in tight engagement with its support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SAM J. KILLINGSlVORTH.
