HILMEN C. LYNG, OF FORT BENTON, MONTANA.
LAMP-BURNER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 26, 1909.
Patented June 14, 1910.
Serial No. 509,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILMEN C. LYNG,
citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Benton, in the county of Chouteau and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Burner Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be attached to the burners of lamps or like constructions, enabling the burner to be lighted without removing the chimney therefrom, the device comprising a base, a portion on which a match may be scratched inside the lamp chimney, and a shield covering an opening in the lamp chimney, made for the purpose of inserting a match.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern with my attachment thereon; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the chimney-supporting plate of a lantern with my attachment applied thereto, the chimney being in section; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the burner and chimney base of a lantern, my device being in section; and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my device enlarged.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the figures, 2 designates a lantern of any usual or ordinary construction having a chimney-supporting diaphragm -3 such as is ordinarily used on lanterns. 4 designates the chimney of the lantern. This has the form of ordinary chimneys, except that it is provided with an opening 5 in its lower end adjacent to the rim which rests against the diaphragm 3. This opening, as shown, is elongated in the direction of the circumference of the chimney, but it may take any form rendered necessary by the peculiar shape of any special chimney. For the purpose of closing this opening 5, I provide a hinged closure 6 having the form of a plate conforming to the profile of the chimney at the lower end thereof, and also conforming to the curved contour of the chimney. This plate, at its lower edge, at its middle, is cut away, and
the two ends of the plate are turned over to form beads 7 for the reception of a pintle 8.
In order to support the closure, I provide a slotted base strip or plate 9 which, at its outer end, is upwardly bent as at 10 and then outwardly bent as at 11 to fit over the marginal flange that usually surrounds the edge of the diaphragm. 3. At its end, the material of the flange 11 is bent around the pintle 8 at the middle thereof. The plate or closure 6 has thus a hinged connection with the end of the base 9. A coil spring 12 surrounds the pintle, one end of which bears against the plate, the other end being fixed to the base in any desired manner. This coil spring acts to force the plate up against the opening 5 of the lamp chimney, and thus normally closes this opening. At its inner end, the base strip 9 is upwardly bent as at 13 and laterally elongated to form a relatively wide support for a strip of sand paper 14. This sand paper or equivalent material, is held in place by turning over the ends of the strip 13 and turning down a small projecting ear 15 on the upper side of the plate 13.
To securely hold the supporting strip 13 in place, I cut a tongue 16 from the strip, thus forming a slot 17 in the strip, and this tongue I bend upwardly and then outwardly so that the upper end of the tongue bears against the up er edge of the plate 13 to which it may e connected in any suitable manner. Bolts 19 pass down through the slot in the strip and through the perforated plate or diaphragm 9. Thus, the base strip may be easily adjusted inwardly or upwardly radially on the diaphragm 3 to suit the device to various sized lamps and various conditions of operation.
The operation of my device is obvious. When it is desired to light the lantern, instead of having to remove the chimney from the burner, it is only necessary to open the door or closure 6, insert the match into the lamp chimney through the opening 5 and scratch it upon the sand paper. It will be seen that the flame of the match is shielded by the chimney, and thus is not likely to be blown out in a high wind, as very often occurs in lighting ordinary lanterns. The device is simple, can be applied to any lantern of usual construction, may be cheaply made, and I have found it effective in practice.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the character described comprising a base adapted to be attached to the chimney supporting plate of a lantern, a roughened plate formed with said base near the inner end thereof, a plate hinged to the other end of the base and adapted to close an opening through the lamp chimney, and a spring holding said plate in its closing position.
2. In a device of the character described a base adapted to be attached to the chimney supporting plate of a lantern and having an angular outer end adapted to fit over the edge of said chimney supporting plate, a roughened plate carried by said base near the inner end thereof, and a spring-pressed closing plate hinged to the outer angular end of the base and adapted to close an opening in a lamp chimney.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a slotted base with bolts whereby it may be adjusted to the chimney support of a lantern, an upwardly extending roughened strip on the inner end of the base, and a closing plate pivotally carried on the outer end of the base and adapted to close an opening through a chimney, said closing plate being provided with a spring normally holding it inward and against the chimney.
at. In a device of the character described, a slotted strip, bolts passing through the slot of said strip, whereby the base may be attached to the supporting plate of a lantern, an upwardly turned portion on the inner end of the plate carrying a roughened material upon its face, a support for said upwardly turned portion, and a closing plate pivoted to the outer end of the strip adapted to close the opening through a lamp chimney, and a spring attached at one end to the base and the other end of said spring bearing against the plate to force it inward.
5. The combination with a lantern, a chimney-supporting plate and a chimney carried thereon and having an opening in its lower edge, of a base strip attachable to the lamp-supporting plate, the end of said strip being transversely extended, the upwardly turned ends of said extended portion being bent inward, a strip of material having a roughened surface carried between said inwardly bent portion, a plate adapted to close the opening in the lamp chimney, a pintle pivotally securing the lower edge of the plate to the base, and a spring surrounding the pintle and having one end thereof bearing against the plate to hold it closed.
6. The combination with a lantern, a chimney-supporting plate thereon, and a chimney, said chimney having an opening at one side at its lower edge, of a base plate having a longitudinal tongue cutout therefrom, bent over and extended in the line of said plate, and then upwardly bent, the inner end of said plate being laterally extended on each side and upwardly bent, the upper end of the tongue engaging with said upwardly bent portion to support it, a bolt passing through the slot of said plate, a pintle attached to the outer end of the plate a closing plate pivotally connected by said pintle to the outer end of the base plate and adapted to close the opening in the lamp chimney, and a spring surrounding the pintle and having one end thereof bearing against the closing plate to force it inward against the lamp chimney.
7. A device of the character described including a base plate, a roughened plate carried by said base plate at the inner end thereof, a closing plate hinged to the other end of the base plate for an outward movement therefrom, and a spring forcing the free end of the hinged plate inward toward the base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
