SpecificationzofLetters "Patent;
Application filed June 17, 19111 Patented Oct. 3, 191-1.
Serial No. 633,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS GAWELL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Portage, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamps and more particularly to that type commonly known as a benzoin or an acetylene lamp.
The primary object of my invention is to furnish a lamp of the above type with a novel globe and reflector holder, which can be swung outwardly to permit of easy access being had to the burner of the lamp.
A further object of this invention is to provide a globe and reflector holder for lamps that is normally retained in a closed position to firmly support the globe and prevent its displacement when the lamp is being moved.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the lamp, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
A lamp in accordance with this invention comprises a receptacle 1 having a flat bottom 2 and a neck 3, which is interiorly screw threaded, as at 4.
, Detachably mounted in the neck 3 is a depending exteriorly screw threaded sleeve 5 of a cylindrical drum or casing 6 adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the neck 3. The casing 6 is of a greater diameter than the sleeve 5 whereby the lower edges thereof will protrude beyond the edges of the neck, and the bottom of said casing has openings 7 adapted to admit air to said casing. The top 8 of the casing is perforated, as at 9 and the side walls of the casing protrude above the top 8 to surround and embrace the lower neck 10 of a globe 11, said neck resting upon the top 8.
.The casing 6 is provided with an outwardly extending bracket 12 and hinged or otherwise pivotally connected to the upper edge of the bracket 12, at the outer end thereof, as at 13, is a conical-shaped reflector 1 1, which in a closed position is in proximity to the globe 11. The reflector 14 adjacent to the lower edge thereof is provided with two resilient clamping arms 15 having semi-cylindrical portions 16 adapted to embrace the lower neck 10 of the globe 11. The upper edge of the reflector is provided with an outwardly extending arm 17 having a channel-shaped ring or annulus 18 adapted to embrace the upper edges of the upper neck 19 of the globe 11. The arms 15 and 17 cooperate in retaining the globe 11 in a fixed position relatively to the reflector, but by opening the arms 15 the globe 11 can be easily removed when it is desired to clean the same.
To normally retain the globe holder in a closed position with the lower neck 10 resting upon the top 8 of the casing 6, the outer end of the bracket 12 is provided with a fiat spring 20 havin the upper end thereof engaging the outer s1de of the reflector 14- The top and bottom of the casing 6 are adapted to support a vertical tube 21 that has the upper end thereof provided with a burner 22 and the lower end extending in close juxtaposition to the flat bottom of the receptacle 1.
The receptacle 1 can be made of a vitreous material, as glass, and the globe holder of metal.
What I claim is The combination with a receptacle having a neck, of a glass holder consisting of a perforated casing having a depending sleeve detachably mounted in the neck of said receptacle, an outwardly extending bracket carried by said casing, a reflector hinged to the outer end of said bracket, resilient arms carried by said reflector and adapted in a closed position with the lower neck of 10 to embrace the lowerneck of a globe, an the globe resting upon the to 3 of said casing. arm carried bythe upper edge of said re- In testimony whereof I a X my signature fiector, a channel-shaped ring carried by the in the presence of two witnesses. outer end of said arm and adapted to engage the edges of the upper end of a globe, and MATHIAS GAWELL' a spring carried by the outer end of said Witnesses:
bracket andengaging the outer side of said JACOB SMITH,
receptacle andadapted to retain said holder J NO. J. GREEN.
