LAMP-CHIMNEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application led August 12, 1918. Serial No. 249,593.
T0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. SELVAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grant, in the county of Marshall and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimneys, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to lamps and has special reference to a lamp chimney support.
One object of this invention is the production of a lamp chimney support which is so constructed as to firmly support the lamp chimney contiguous to a burner, although when access is desired to the burner, the support may be swung to move the lamp chimney to one side and permit of such access.
Another object of this invention is the production of a lamp chimney support which consists of a plate pivotally or hingedly mounted upon the supporting base of the lamp burner, thus allowing the plate to normally support a lamp chimney over a burner, although when access is desiredto the burner, the lamp chimney may be easily swung to one side. l
Another object of this invention is the production of a lamp chimney support wherein the supporting plate is movably mounted upon the base of the lamp burner, this plate being provided with a atch for normally holding the same against movement, while the guard fingers are fixed upon the plate to firmly retain a lamp chimney in engagement with the plate so that when the plate is swung to one side, the chimney will be moved to allow free access to the burner.
One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the drawing, in which-'- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp chimney support. Y
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a central transverse section through the support, the lamp burner being shown in fragmentary side elevation.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of a portion of the plate, illustrating the manner in which one of the guard lingers is held in engagement therewith.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, about to be described, it will the same where no harm will be done there-v to and like other objectionable operations are necessary.
In the present invention as illustrated however, the plate 11 is provided with a sleeve 12 upon its periphery and this sleeve 12 extends in alinement with the sleeve 13 formed on the base 14 of the burner 10. A pivot pin 15 passes through the sleeves l2 and 13 and thus holds the plate 11 upon the lamp burner. This Vplate 11 is provided with a central opening 16 formed therethrough to allow the burner to be projected through the plate, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and 3. In order to hold this plate 11 against accidental movement, a catch 17 is formed upon the periphery of the plate 11, opposite to the sleeve 12 and when this plate is in its normal position, the latch 17 engages over the periphery of the base portion of the burner 10 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, thus holding the plate 11 against any tendency of accidental movement.
The guard fingers 18 are curved throughouttheir entire length, as is the usual construction of elements of this nature, to facilitate the gripping of a chimney by the fingers, when a chimney is placed on the plate 11. These lingers have inwardly bent ends 19 which engage the under surface of the plate 11 and the inwardly bent ends 19 are riveted as indicated at 20. Therefore, the guard fingers will be fiXedly held in set position uponthe plate and will be held in engagement with a support.
When the device is in use, it is placed in engagement with a lamp burner base, as hereinbefore described and is then swung to a closed position to allow the latch 17 to engage the base. The lamp chimney as indicated in dotted lines at 21 in Fig. 1 is then inserted between the fingers 18 to rest upon the base and be firmly held upon the plate by these lingers. When however, access is desired to the burner, such as necessary when the lamp is being lighted, the latch 17 may be swung outwardly and thus release the plate from its set position. At this time, the plate may be swung upwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus allowing free access to the burner. After the lamp has been lighted or any otherY disired operation has taken place, the plate may be returned to its normal position to bear upon the base 14. It will be noted that this plate 1l is provided with an annular flange 11 upon its periphery so as to allow this flange to be engaged firmly with the base 14 of the lamp burner 10 for evenly supporting the plate, although allowing sufficient space between the plate and base for the insertion of the bent end 19 of the guard fingers 18, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. From this description, it will be seen that even though the lamp chimney is hot, it may be quickly removed from the burner, or that whenever it is desired to light the lamp, the chimney will be swung to one side by like movement of the supporting plate and then after the desired operation has taken place, the chimney may be quickly returned to its proper position over the burner, simply by the return of the plate to its normal condition and under such conditions it is entirely unnecessary to grip the chimney.
The foregoing description and the drawingshave reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' what I claim as new and desire to secure thereon, a plate having a sleeve, a pin passingy through said sleeves for hingedly mounted said plate upon said base7 a latch carried by said plate and engaging the base for holding said plate against accidental movement, guard fingers having inwardly bent ends mounted upon said plate, whereby a chimney may be. positioned upon said plate and retained by said fingers. v
2. A device of the character described comprising a burner base, a plate hingedly mounted upon said bas'e, means for releasably holding said plate in a set position, said plate having an annular flange upon its periphery, guard fingers' having inwardly bent ends fixed upon said plate, said fiange engaging said base for firmly supporting said plate although allowing sufiicient space for the interpositi'oning of the ends of said lingers.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of av burner base having sleeves thereon, a plate having a sleeve, a pin passing through said sleeves for hingedly mounting said plate upon said base, a latch carried by said plate and engaging the base for holding said plate against accidental movement, said plate having an annular flange upon its periphery, guard fingers having inwardly bent ends fixed upon said plate, said flange engaging said base for firmly supporting said plate although allowing sufficient space for the bent ends of said fingers Vbetween the plate and said base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
