IMPROVEMENT IN ADVERTiSlNG-DESKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 157,409, dated December 1, 1874; application filed September 12, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, JOHN F. MARTIN, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Desks and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specitication.

The nature of my invention consists in a desk bulged outward in the center, and provided with a removable revolving advertisingcylinder; and also in combining therewith a series of lettered drawers, each of said drawers containing a series of numbered compart ments, as will be hereinafter more fully set I forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view from the front of my advertising-desk, and Fig. 2 is a similar view from the rear of the same.

A represents the main part of a desk, and B is the stand usually placed on the back part of a desk. The center of the stand B is bulged outward in front, as shown at O, and provided with suitable glass fronts. In this part of the stand is placed a vertical revolving cylinder, I), which is journaled in top and bottom slides E E, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it can be easily removed from the desk when desired. At the bottom of the cylinder A are knobs a a, placed at suitable distances apart, and pro jecting through an aperture at the bottom of the bulge G, by means of which the cylinder may be revolved in either direction from the front of the desk. Drawers G G are arranged in the main part A, as well as on each side of the bulge O in the stand B, and these drawers are lettered on the front in regular rotation, A, B, O, D, 850. Each drawer G is provided with longitudinal and transverse partitions b, which divide the same into a series of compartments for containing business-cards. These compartments are all numbered, in each drawer, 1, 2, 3, &c.

The exterior surface of the revolving cylinder is divided into vertical spaces for the attachment of brief advertisemen ts,which should only contain the name and occupation of advertiser, with a reference to the particular drawer, and compartment in such drawer, in which the business-card of the advertiser will be found.

Advertising-desks of this character may be used in hotels and any other public places, and will be found of great service not only to the advertiser, but also to the public gener ally.

I am aware that a revolving advertisingcylinder, in combination with a writing desk or table, is not new.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the desk A E, having bulge O and hinged door at the rear, the re volving cylinder 1), journaled to the dovetailed slides E, and removable from the desk through the rear door, as set forth.
