UNITED lSTATES I JOHN B. BASKERVILLE, F ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.
p RECORD SHEET.
Application` filed, July 25, 1925. serial No. 46,126.
To all whom, -z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, JoHN B. BASKHRVTLLE, a citizen of the Fnlted States, residing at Roanoke, 1n the county of Roanoke and p State of Virginia, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements 1n Record Sheets,
of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists of record sheets for use on impactrecorders or socalled impactographs, or like instruments, used in determining the intensity of impacts sustained by rolling stock. Y y
An object of the invention is to provide record sheets composed of a plurality of parts one of wh-ich is provided with spaces to receive data explanatory of the time of, place at which, etc., and similar data, that the impactograph was mounted in a car or associated with some other part of the rolling stock, each of the other sheets having on one side, differently captioned, and, if desired, differently colored, zones, which receive the impressions of the impactograph, the zone receiving the impression varying in Vaccordance with the intensity of the impact sustained by the rolling stock; the opposite side ofeach sheet being provided with certain indicia and notation receivlng spaces for use by the agent in explanation of the condition, status, etc., of the freight.
A further object of the invention is to provide record sheets which are compiled to receive all information in connection with the contents of the railway car from the time of loading until the destination of the Vcar is reached including impressions or marks -significantbf the impacts sustained by the car during transit, as well as the time of occurrence of the impacts.
Of course, other objects of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the specification taken in connection with the .accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of record sheets constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the back of the sheet shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a compilation of record sheets and insert carbons associated in accordance with this invention; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of The record sheets constructed in accordance with the present invention consist of transit sheets the front of one of which is shown in Fig. l and the back thereof shown in Fig. 3, any number of which may be elnployed with carbon sheets 7 interposed therebetween. The complete pad of record sheets further consists of a so-called station dor terminal sheet 8, such as that shown in Fig. 2. In other words the sheets 8 are removed from the pad at the station or terminal before the record sheets as an entirety are mounted in the impactograph.
`The transit sheets 6 are mounted in the impactograph and are provided with openings 9 to engage the sheets with certain parts of the impactograph, the openings being staggered so as to avoid the possibility of incorrectlyl positioning the sheets in the irnpactorap Each of the sheets 8 -is divided into two parts by scoring l0 arranged approximately midway the ends of the sheet. The upper part of the sheet, as shown in Fig. 2, is adapted to contain the name of the railroad company, and certain other data, such, for instance, as the name of the station, the time of placing the impactograph in the car, the numberof the car, date, etc., this indicia receiving portion of the sheet being designated 11 in the drawings. This half of the sheet is to be inclosed with the way bills. The lower half of the sheet is to be forwarded to the general claim agent and is also provided with an indicia receiving part at'its lower end designated 12. This is to be filled in by the agent and is adapted to contain a report of placing the impactograph, such as the number of the impacto.- graph, car number, date placed in the car, etc. The back of the sheet 8 is blank and is contiguous to the back of one of the carbon sheets 7.
When the record sheets are laced in the impactograph, the back 13 o the carbon sheet 7 next to the sheet 8 is uppermost to be impinged against by the mechanism of the impactograph. The carbon face ofpeach of thasheets 7 is primarily positioned so as to engage the so-called bottom face of each of the sheets 6. Consequently, impressions made on the backs 13 of the carbon sheets 7 will be transferred to the backs of the sheets 6.
The front face of each sheet 6 consists of the railway agents Vtransfer and check unloaded, the name of the clerk by Whom v'equipped With a pluralit it is checked, the date the car is unloaded, etc. In addition, the front of the sheet is of segregated lined zones 1 5 each of which zones is captioned and adapted to receive certain information relative to the car and its contents. The` bottom of the sheet is provided with a space 16 for the reception of certain additional data or notations. The back of cach of the sheets 6 is provided at the top with a segregated zone or space 17 Vwhich is adapted to receive certain indicia and contains lines for the reception of certain l notations. vThe bottom of the sheet is provided- With asimilar zone 18 for the same purpose. The intermediate portion of thesheet has oblong zones provided therein` certain of which, as shown at 19, are captioned' Vhite while other zones at the top and bottom of the White `zones are captioned Green,,Red and Blue as indicated at 20, 21 and 22 respectively.. Since the carbon faces of the sheets 7 impinge against the zone Spaces 19, 20, 21 and 22, it is apparent that any impression made on the backs of the vcarbon sheets Will be trans ferred to some one of the zones on the backs of the sheets .6.l The colors white, green, red and blue have a certain significance to railroad men and consequently proper remedial stepscan be taken depending ,upon 'the zone in which the impression is made. The time ofl the occurrence of the impact will'be known to anyone familiar withvreading the record sheet depending updii thev position of the impression in the particular zone where it appears.
After the impactograph reaches its destination it is lremoved from the car andthe record sheets then taken therefrom. Each of the carbon sheets 7 is reversed so as to bring the carbon faces thereof into .enga e- 60 ment with the front face of each of t e sheets 6 except the outer one of the latter. The agent writes the d'ata on the front face of the outer of the sheets 6 and this data is transferred to the front faces lof the underlying sheets through the carbons 7. Consequcntly, the front face of each sheet 6 will contain complete data aste the condition of the contents of thecar, such, for instance as the frei ht, after it has reached its destination, whi e the .backv face of each of said sheets will indicate the impacts received by the car during transit. It is, of course, to-bc understood that as many of the sheets 6 may be employed as desired. For illustration, in thel present instance, three of the sheets 6 are shown with a corresponding number of carbon sheets 7 interposed therebetween. Moreover, instead ofl 4making the sheets 6 separate, as shown in Fig. 4, a single sheet, such as shown at 6 in Fig. 5 may be used. This sheet may be reversely folded upon itself in fanfold fashion with the carbons 7 interposed therebetween, the bottom portion, indicated 8',
bearing the same data as the Sheet 8 shown'- in Fig. 2.: The parts of this ,unitary sheet structure may be severed on the lines 'of fold 23.
While these sheets are especially adapted for use on instruments, such as impactographs, it is nevertheless to be understood that there are Various other uses therefor and the sheets may be modified to adapt the the same for use inthese different capacities in accordance with the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What is claimed is 1. A record receiver for freight car impaetographs includingI a sheetA havin indicia at the 'top and bottom and intermediate spaces captioned With the names of different colors.
2. A record receiver for freight car impactographs including a sheet having indicia at the top and bottom and intermediate spaces of different colors.
