UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD Z. LEWIS, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GENERAL MANIFOLD .AND PRINTING COMPANY, 0F FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, A- CORPORATION CF PENNSYLVANIA.
MANIFOLDIN G SALESMANS CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD Z. LEWIS, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Salesmens Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings; and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form aL part of this specification.
This invention relates to a manifolding salesmans check and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is shown herein as applied to a check for meal service and more particularly to the checks used on dining cars.
The objects and advantages of the invention will be pointed out as I proceed with my specificatlon.
In the dt'awingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved salesman s check, the same having parts torn away and turned back to show the inner construction of the check. Fig. 2 is a view representing a. transverse section through the check in a Iplane indicated by the line 2--2 of Fig. ,1. ig. 3 is a view representing a longitudinal section through the check in a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Figs, 4 and 5 represent plan views of the face and back, re-
spectively, of a sheet prepared for use in,
forming my improved check.
My improved check is of that kind which includes 'an accountants check and also a requisition or cooks check, as it is com- Inonly called in connection with checks for dining car service,-the first check, that is to say the accountants check, being so constructed as to provide a record which cannot be changed or altered without destroying the accountants check, or at least damagmgit in such manner that there will be apparent evidence that a change or alteratlon has been made.
As 'shown in the drawing, 10 indicates the accountants check as a Whole, and 11 the requisition or cooks check, The said checks are made from a single sheet of paper as `follows: 12, (see Figs. 4 and 5.) indicates a sheet of aper which is equal in width to the length of, the checks to be made from 1t and which is divided by suitable score marks or lines of weakening, 13, 14, into three sections 15, 16 and 17, each equal in Width to the Width of the said checks.
On the face of one of the end sections,
preferably on that of 15, the left-hand end one, is printed the requisition or cooks check-form, and on the face of the other end section 17 is printed the accountants check-form. Transfer material 18 is applied to the back of thestrip 12 except at the lateral marginal parts of said strip which are left free of such material so as not to interfere with the pasting vtogether of the sections of the'sheet at said lateral margms.
To form the check, the intermediate section 16 of the strip 12 is folded under the accountants check-section 17 rand a sheet of heavier paper or card-board 19 ofthe size of the check is inserted between the sections 16 and 17. The marginal edges 20 and 21 at the top and bottom of the check are then pasted to the intermediate heavier sheet 19, and the sections 16 and 17 of the sheet are stitched together adjacent to the score mark 13 dividing the intermediate check section 16 from the cooks check section 15 by a line of stitching 22. The requisition or cooks check 15 is then folded down on top of the accountants check, thus finishing the construction of the check which is now ready for use.
In my improved check, the requisition or cooks check forms the outer member of the salesmans check, that is to say, the one that receives the original writing made by the purchaser or the person ordering. By reason'of the transfer material on the rear face of the cooks check, the matter written on the cooks check is transferred to the accountants check, and in addition a carbon copy is made on the intermediate heavier sheet 19 by reason of the transfer material on the rear face of the accuntants check. As it is impossible to get at the intermediate sheet 19, Without tearing the checks, it will be apparent that evidence of any change or alteration will appear on the copy made on the said intermediate sheet, and the salesman or waiter, knowing this will not attempt to alter the check as originally written. As shown the face of the sheet12 on which the cooks and accountants checks are printed, is coated with a light colored wax-like coating adapted to be written upon but which will smudge or blur under the action of an eraser. This increases the difculty of altering the writing on the check without detection.
I claim as my invention 1. A salesmans manifolding checkA consisting of a single sheet divided transversely by lines of fold into three sections and provided on its back with transfer material, the end sections of said sheetl constituting, respectively, an accountantzs check-form and arequisition check-form, and of a sheet of heavier material of substantially the size of said sections, the accountants check-section and the intermediate section being folded about said sheet of heavier material and being secured together at their ends and at one side along a line adjacent the ,fold line between the said intermediate section and the requisition check section, and the requisition check section being then folded down on top of the accountants check section.
2. A salesmans manifolding check consisting of a single sheet divided transverselyT by lines of fold into three sections and provided on its back with transfer material, the
end sections of said sheet having printed on their faces, respectively, an accountants check-form and a requisi ion check-form, and of a sheet of heavier material of substantially the size of said sections, the accountants check section and the intermediate sections ybeing folded about said sheet of heavier material and being secured together at their ends by adhesive material and at one side by a line of stitching adjacent the fold line between the 'said intermediate section and the requisition check section, and the requisition check ysection being folded down on top of the accountants check section.
In testimony, that as my invention I affix my presence of two witnesses, September A. D 1912.
EDWARD Z. LEWIS.
I claim the foregoing signature in the this 3rd day of Witnesses:
