Specification of Letters Patent.
MANIFOLDING SALESIVIANS CHECK.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed February 3. 1910. Serial No. 541,813.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EpWARD Z. LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Salesmens Checks; and I do hereby declare that;
the following is" a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the agcompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a multiform salesmans check and the object of the invention is to provide a check constructed in such a way that it is not only adapted for the production of theusual original and carboncopies of the same, but is also adapted to produce in inscribing the original bill an indestructible record of the bill which cannot be tampered with without detection and upon which will be reproduced whatever is written upon the original bill including any changes oralterations made thereon.
The invention, as shown and described herein, is applied to a check for meal service and more particularly to the checks used on dining cars. In said check form t-here is provided an original check upon which the order is written, two or more cooks checks underlying said original check, upon which carbon impressions are made of what is written on the bill, and a hacker or card to which all of the parts are attached. Means are provided between the original check and the cooks checks to produce carbon impressions on the latter, and after the order is written on the original the carbon copy ofthe same is torn out and sent to the cook. In case additional orders are'w'ritten there remains another cooks check or slip which will receive'a carbon reproduction of'what' is added to the bill. After this is detached the total is written on theoriginal which is,
reproduced on the'card.
The invention relates specifically to the construction of the original check.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows my improved check with parts torn away or turned up-to disclose t-heunderlying sheets. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 on the line 2-2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 1
4 is a perparts torn away. Fig. 5 is a plan view of check and the duplicate check the original check before it has been folded into shape. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the first cooks check. F ig. 7 is a plan view of the second cooks check. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the card to which all of the checks are at tached.
Referring now to that embodiment-of my invention illustrated in the drawings, A is the original check as a whole, B, C, dupli cate checks whichare herein referred to as cooks checks, and D, the cardboard backer to which said several checks are attached. As illustrated in the drawings, each of the checks is printed as .usual with any desired printed items and such other printed matter as is called for by the particular use to which the check is to be put.
The original check is folded from a strip of paper A (see Fig. 5), which is in width equal to the height of the check, and in length, three times the width of said check.
by means of lines of perforations a, g to permit of their ready foldin in the manner presently to be described. pon one side of the middle section a of the sheet A is printed the original check form A", and the rear side of said middle section is provided with a' carbon su'rface, as indicated at A (see Fig. 4). Upon the reverse side of the section a, that is'to say, on the side of the sheet A opposite the side upon which the original check form appears, is printed a duplicate copy of the original check, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, this form being arranged so that when the section a is folded under the section of, the original will register with each other.. The section a is provided with a carbon face on the same side of the sheet A as is the original printed form A", as indicated at a. The opposite side of said section is plain and unprinted.
In folding the sheet A the section a is folded under the section a and the section a then folded so as to underlie thesec tion All of the said sections are then per manently stitched together along the top and bottom of the printed form A", as indicated at a a (see Fig. 4). The original check A and the two duplicate checks B, C, are then secured to the card backer by means of staples as indicated at d, d, or in any other convenient manner.
It will be apparent that in the assembled .ultiform check the carbon surface a which is on the underside of the original check A, will in the first instance come in contact with the uppermost cooks check B and, after said cooks check is detached, in contact with the one next underneath it, C, and that after this is torn out said carbon surface comes in contact with the card orbacker D. The cooks checks B, C, are provided near their tops with lines of perforations b, 0 (see Figs. 6 and 7) in order to provide for their ready detachment.
The card D is provided near its bottom with a detachable section D upon which is printed at punch-check D printed with items of dollars and cents which corresponds to a similar punch-check D printed above the line of detachment. This detachable check is used as a receipt for the purchaser and is punched at the total amount on the original check and indicates the total amount of the bill.
The total amount is not written upon the bill, until the cooks checks have been used and detached, and as the original bill then rests on the card D with its carbon face in contact therewith the total written upon the original bill will be duplicated on the detachable punch-check D The advantages of my improved multiform salesman check are apparent from the above description. An unalterable record of whatever is Written on the original check is made on the duplicate section of the original check. It is absolutely impossible to get at this duplicate check section without either tearing the check along the stitching line or along the perforated lines at each edge. The total amount appearing on the passengers receipt check is also bound to agree with the total which appears on the duplicate check section.
It. is obvious that the check may be variously modified without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not wish to limit myself to the construction shown herein except as pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention w 1. A manifolding salesmans check comprising, in combination with a' suitable hacker and one or more detachable duplicate check forms, a composite check consisting of a single piece of paper folded to form an outer original check section, and an inner record check section, said sheet being folded to entirely inclose said record check section and being stitched permanently along the top and bottom edges of the check with means located between said original check section and said record check section to produce a carbon copy on the latter, and means interposed between said composite check as a whole and said duplicate checks to produce carbon copies of said duplicate checks, to-
gether with means for securing all of the sheet of paper folded in sections, one of said sections being an original check section on one side and having carbon reproducing material located on the other side, another check section being a record check section and having printed thereon on its reverse side and in reverse position a form corresponding with the form on the original and being adapted to be folded under said original,
and an inclosing check section adapted to underlie said record check section, together with means for permanently securing said sections together along the top and bottom lines of the form, in combination with carbon means interposed between said composite check as a whole and said duplicate checks.
3. A composite record check comprising a sheet of paper folded in three sections, one of said sections having printed on one side an original form and having its opposite side provided with carbon material, a second section adapted to receive on its reverse side and in reverse position \a duplicate record, said second section being folded under said original check, section, and a third section folded under said second named section, all three sections being stitched together along the top and bottom edges of the form. v
4:. A composite record check comprising a sheet of'paper folded in three sect1ons,,o ne of said sections comprising anouter, original check section, a second check section adapted to underlie said original check section and receive a duplicate record, means interposed between said original check section and said record checksection to produce acarbon copy on said record check section, and a third section adapted-to underlie said second named section, all three sections be ing stitched together along the top and bottom edges of the form; In testimony, that I, claim the foregoing as my invention I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of February A. D. 1910.
