Clothes washing devices of this type are provided with a steam forming chamber in some part of the structure, usually at the [bottom and adapted for positioning immediately over swim, and with perforated percolating tubes leading from thischamber through which the hot-Water and steam are forced by the action of the expanding steam formed in the steam chamber. This type of percolating device is very eflicient 1n Washing clothes,
but the percolating efi'ect thereofvis entirely dependent upon the actual formation of steam in the steam chamber. 'In other words, the Watermust be heated to the boiling point in order tovrenderfthe' device effective. It is the object of the present invention, therefore, to provide an improvement upon this type of Washing device,
wherein a um and returnin 3i ie'line are employed for forcing'the streaming of the water through the perforated tubes or the like, independently of the action or heat on the water, orwhether the Water ishot or cold. In carrying out this invention for the type of washing apparatus described in the forepart of this specification, a tube and pipe connecting joint 8 is provided, the same being in this instance, for convenience, in the form of a'Y. This joint is threaded at 9 at the end of its stem 10, and its branches 11 are permanently connected at the points 12 with the bases 6 of the percolating tubes 6 and communicate through said bases with the interior of the tubes 6. A joint 13 is permanently seated through the side of the boiler 4 in alignment with the stem '10, and both ends of the joint 13 are threaded, as shown at 14. A threaded nipple 15 is likewise permanently seated through the side of the boiler adjacent the joint 13. A returning pipe line 16 is provided and ,hasincorporated therein a rotary pump 17 for forcing a water circulation, ,and any conventional means may be employed for driving the pump. The-ends of the pipe line 16 are threaded atlS and are releasably connected by threaded sleeves 19 .to the joint 13 and nipple 15, respectively. A similar threaded sleeve 19 serves to releasably join the inner end of the joint 13 with the stem 10 of the connecting joint 8. The bases 6 are threaded interiorly at the lower points 20, and threaded plugs 21 are fitted thereinto, thzus serving as removable closures therefor. Threaded caps 22 are provided for sealing the outer ends of the joint 13and the-nipple 15 when .thetorced circulation of water ,is not employed. A stove 23 is provided for heating the water in the boiler.
This apparatus may be operated with water below the boiling point by screwing the plugs 21 into the bases 6', and connecting the stem 10 of the joint 8 with the inner end of the joint 13 with a sleeve 19,. and similarly connecting the ends of the pipe linev 16 with the outer end of the joint 13 and the nipple 15 by sleeves 19. In this arrangement the pump forces a circulation. It may be operated by heat alone in usual manner, by removing the three sleeves 19 and the plugs 21 and sealing the outer ends of the joint 13 and the nipple 15 by two caps 22. Or, both heat from the stove, and the pump may be'employed simultaneously by connecting thepipe "line and removing the base plugs.
Vhile we have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of our invention, it is understood that we-m'ay vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of Your invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claims.
e claim:
1. In combination with a water boiler and apercolating device mounted therein adapted to percolate water under the action of heat, the said percolating device having normal water intakes and water outlets; means for forcing-a percolation of the water independent of the action of heat, said means comprising a returning pipe line leading from and back into the boiler; a pump incorporated in the pipe line; connecting joints for connecting the percolating device with the delivery end of the pipe line; meansfor closing the said connecting joints; sleeves for releasablyconnecting the connecting joints with the delivery end oi the pipe line; and means for closing the normal water intakes of the percolating device.
2. In a combined apparatus of the kind described and embodying a wate boiler, and a percolating device in the boiler, the said percolating device having normal water intakes and water outlets, means auxiliary to and independent of the action of heat for forcing water through the percolating device, saidmeans comprising a pipe line leading from and back into the boiler; meansfor releasably and operatively connecting the delivery end of the pipe line with the percolating device; means for releasably closing' the normal ater inlet of the percolating device; and means for forcing a circulation of water through the pipe line.
3. In a combined apparatus of the kind described and embodying a water boiler, and a percolating device in the boiler, the said percolating device having normal water intakes and water outlets, means auxiliary to and independent of the action of heat for forcing water through the percolating device, said means comprising a pipeline leading from and back ,into the boiler; means for forcing a circulation of water through the pipe line; means for releasably and operatively connecting the .deliveryend of the pipe line with the percolating device 'through an openingin the percolating device normal inlet thereof is open.
