Patented Sept 9, 1924,
EDWARD KRONIVIAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STERILIZING AND WATER-HEATING DEVICE.
Application filed. April 4, 1923. Serial No. 629,804.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD KRONMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sterilizing and Water-Heating Devices, of which the following is a specification sufiicient to enable those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to utilize the same My improvements relate to sterilizing and water heating apparatus generally, but more particularly to the type of such apparatus designed for use in barber shops, hospitals, and other places in which a continuous supply of hot water for shaving, washing, and analogous purposes is desirable, in conjunction with means for effecting the sterilizing of large quantities of towels, napkins and the like for sanitary reasons. The object of my invention is the production of a comparatively simple and inexpensive unitary device of the character designated, of maximum capacity and efficiency, in which the hot water tank, steam generator, and sterilizing chamber are detachably mounted one above the other in such manner as to facilitate inspection, cleaning, and so forth; in which the water in the steam generator is heated by means of one or more drop tubes positioned in flues passing through the hot'water tank; in which provision is made for feeding the steam generator, as. required, with hot water direct from the heating tank, etc., all as hereinafter fully and specifically described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I exemplify a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention in a sterilizing and water heating device of unitary character, although I do not limit myself to the identical form and construction of parts shown since changes may be made in minor details and modifications resorted to without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
With this understanding,
Fig. 1, represents what may be designated as a front elevation of my improved sterilizing and water heating apparatus;
Fig. 2, is an elevation of the sterilizing chamber removed from the top of the steam generator;
Fig. 3, is a central vertical sectional elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, is a horizontal section taken upon plane of line 6-6, Fig. 3.
The tank section T, preferably cylindrical in shape, is removably supported on a basic standard B, of any suitableor desired configuration, having inlets Z), Z), in its upper portion for the admission ofair to the heating chamber 2,, in the lower part of saidtank T, in which the heating element H, is positioned, -said heating element consisting of a gas burner or equivalent means of raising the temperature. j 7 7 Above the heating chamber 't, is}, formed with a diaphragm 26', the space t lbetween which and the upper diaphragm tflconstitutes the main water chamber or tank proper, supplied through the inlet with water under service pressure,t being the outlet for the supply of hot water for various' extraneous uses, and the outlet i being provided with a valve i for the control of the flow. By placing thev inlet 6 at the upper part of the water chamber t, and the 7 outlet li at the lower portion thereof,,Iin-
sure a uniform temperature ofwater within said water chamber t". r
The steam generator G, rests upon the top of the tank'section T, and may be supplied with hotwater therefrom through the medium of the pipes 12, 1), controlled by the valve p. The sterilizing chamber S, in turn rests upon the said steam generator G, being formed with a neck 8, fitting in an opening formed for the purpose in the upper ortion of said steam generating chamber as shown more particularly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, said sterilizing chamber S, being also formed with a drainage floor 3, for the support of towels, etc. to be steamed, and with the usual door 8 in a manner at present well known in the "art.
The water in the steam generator G, is heated through the medium of drop tubes 9, g, which protrude into fines t t extending vertically through the water space t in the tank T, and through which the heated air and products of combustion (if any) pass from the heating chamber 6, to the compartment at, between the upper diaphragm of the tank T, and the bottom m of said steam generator, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, of the drawings,the heated air, etc., escaping eventually through outlets 02, formed for the purpose in the side walls of said compartment The drop tubes 9, g, are of course closed at their lower extremities, their upper extremities opening into the steam generating chamber G, of which they practically form a part.
Any desired plural number of these drop tubes 9, 9, may be provided, suitably spaced apart; and in order to facilitate removal of sediment each tube may be provided with a drainage pipe 9, as shown in connection with the central drop tube 9, shown in the drawings,said drainage pipe g, extending through the heating chamber t, and being provided with an external pet cock 5 In order to "facilitate the disconnection of this drain pipe when it is desired to remove the steam generator (at, from the tank, the inner end of said pipe 9, is male screw threaded for engagement with an internally threaded union 9 on the bottom of the said drop tube 9. A union 0 may be provided in the pipe connections p, 9, between the tank T, and the steam generator G, to facilitate disconnection between said parts when desired.
My specific construction and arrangement of parts is simple and eitective,the heat being utilized to the fullest extent, Furthermore, the whole apparatus may be quickly taken apart for cleaning, repairs, etc.; and externally is of compact symmetrical appearance.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In sterilizing and Water heating apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a water tank, means thereunder for heating same, said tank being formed with a flue for the passage of the hot air,
etc., and a steam generator superposed on said Water tank and formed with a drop tube extending into said flue in the water tank, said drop tube being closed except at the top and the latter opening into said generator, together with a sterilizing chamber mounted on said steam generator, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. In sterilizing and water heating apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a water tank, means thereunder for heating same, said tank being formed with a flue for the passage of the hot air, etc, and a steam generator superposed on said water tank and formed with a drop tube extending into said flue in the water tank, said drop tube being closed except at the top and the latter opening into said generator, said drop tube being provided with a drain tube and pet cock, together with a sterilizing chamber mounted on said steam generator, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. ln sterilizing and water heating apparatus of the character designated, the combination of a water tank, means thereunder for heating the same, said tank being formed with a plurality of flues tor the passage of hotair, etc, and a steam generator superposed on said water tank and formed with a plurality of drop tubes extending each into one of the said fiues in the water tank, said drop tubes being closed except at the top' and the latter opening into said generator, together with a sterilizing chamber mounted on said steam generator, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
