Description

M. aoLDmAN.
Candlesticks.
Patented Dec-.1,1874- UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
MOSES GOLDMAN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COANDLESTICKS.
Specification formin g part of Letters Patent No. 157,282, dated December 1, 1874 application filed October 8, 1874.
yConvenient and safe pocket-light that shall be capable of being readily attached to the arm of a Chair, edge of a bedstead, or other suitable and convenient article; and it consists in arranging within a cylindrical Case a small drawer for a match-safe and a sliding candle safe and holder, which can be drawn out at one end of the Case, and in providing the other end with a spring-clamp, by which it can be attached to any suitable object that may be convenient.
In the drawing, Figure l is a view of my improved pocket-light when in use; Fig 2, a section through line a' y in Fig. l; Fig. 3, a top view of same extended, to show portions of the matchsafe and candle-safe and the candlestick; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section when Closed; Fig. 5, an isometric view of the candlestick, and Fig. 6 an isometric view of the match-safe.
A is the cylindrical case, of .a suitable size to' make it convenient for carrying. b 1s the sliding candle safe and holder. c c c are the compartments or safe for candles; d, the place for the Candlestick; e, the Candlestick; j', the lmatch-safe. The candle-safe extends through the entire length of the cylinder; the match-safe about half-way, where it is stopped by the partition l'. The remainder of this space is occupied by a spiral spring, s, which is attached to the partition t' and the cap n, which constitutes the Clamp, by which the Cylinder can be fastened to any desirable object. The inner face of this Cap and' the head of the cylinder may be ratcheted or serrated, or otherwise provided, in order to obtain a more secure hold. g represents the article to which it is attached. The cap a has a shank fitting into the space back of the matchsafe, and is thereby braced. o o are extension bars or braces, itted in openings on the under side of the Cap n and case A. These can be drawn out, as shown in Fig. 1, which may, in some cases, be necessary, and will otherwise give additional support to the cylinder when attached and in use.
The convenience of this attachable pocketlight is evident, and will be more especially appreciated by travelers. It can be carried in the pocket, and readily brought into use by merely drawing out the cap a; and after placing the end of the cylinder on the object to which it is to be attached, releasing the cap, it will be clamped and held in position by the springs. The candles are deposited in the compartments c c c, and are easily accessible and placed in' the Candlestick e. The match-safe is readily opened and a light obtained.
The Candlestick e is provided with a receptacle for waste wax or tallow, iitting the space d in front of the compartments c c c, and can loc taken out and cleaned. By this arrangement the other parts are kept clean. It is of a proper height to keep it in position when inclosed. The outer end of the candlesafe b has a Cap tting, and completely Covering, the end of the case A when closed, as best seen in Fig. 4, forming a safe, Clean, compact, and convenient pocket-light.
What I claim as my invention isf"- 1. The Candle-safe b, provided with compartments c c c, place d in front thereof for a removable Candlestick, and a cap on the outer end,.covering the end of the Case A when closed, and the match-safef, fitting in a space over the Candle-safe, all arranged within the cylindrical case A, as shown, and constructed and operating substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the candle-safe b, the removable Candlestick e, having a receptacle for waste wax or tallow, ttin g the space d, constructed as shown, for the purpose set forth.
3. The spring-clamp, Consisting of the cap n and spring s, within a shank attached to the testing Witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county cap u, in combination With a pocket-light, subof Onondaga and State of New York, this 3d stantially as shown and described. day of October, 1874.
4. In combination With the spring-clamp, the extension-braces o 0, substantially as and MOSES GOLDMAN iL S'] for the purpose set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony whereofhave signedmynmne F. C. ANDERSEN, and afxed my seal in the presence of two at- E. LAAss.
