UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. KENNEDY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SAC RAM ENTAL CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,519, dated October 28, 1890. Application filed October 4, 1889. Serial No. 325,982, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES J. KENNEDY, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Sacramental Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification My invention relates to cases for sacramental sets. These sets are used in the performance of sacramental rites to the sick, and consist of a candelabrum provided with a crucifiX, a communion-cloth, a manual, a Waterbottle, a salt-receptacle, an ablution-cup, and candles for the candelabrum.
The object of my invention is to provide a case for a sacramental set, suitable for the household, having the interior so arranged as to locate the various articles composing the set in the most convenient position for speedy use, as Well as in a compact manner, and thus overcoming the disadvantage arising from the separation of these various articles at the time When they should be found together instead of separate.
My improvement consists in a case having novel features of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure I is a perspective view of the case with the various parts of the set in place. Fig. II is a plan view of the case open, the set being omitted.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body, and 2 the lid, of the case constructed to hold the various parts of the set required in performing the sacramental rites. The body is formed with a compartment 1, having a partition 1 providing a narrow chamber 1 at one end of the compartment; with a rectangular recess 1 and circular recess 1 connected therewith at the front of the compart ment; with circular recesses 1 and 1 at the rear of the compartment; with an elongated recess 1 against the partition, and with a bifurcated support 1 in the middle part of the compartment.
3 represents a candelabrum having its base fitting in the elongated recess and its stand resting on the bifurcated support and provided with its candle'sockets 4.
5 represents a crucifix, which may be at tached to the candelabrum, when desired, by
passing a squared lower end 6 of the same into a socket 7 in the candelabrum. The crucifix is secured to the lid of the case, when not in use, by passing the squared lower end 6 into a socket 8, the upper end of the crucifix being held firmly in place by means of a strap 9, attached to the lid.
10 represents the manual for the sick, used in performing the above-named rites. The manual is secured to a door 11 in the lid of the case by means of a pocket 12, into which the lower end passes, and a strap 13, which passes around the upper end of the manual. The door is hinged transversely of the case to the lid within the compartment 2, and 11 opens into a recess 14, in which the communion-cloth 15 is retained when not in use.
16 represents the holy-Water bottle, which rests in the rectangular and circular recesses.
21 represents the ablution-cup, seated in the recess 1 and 22 the blessed-salt receptacle seated in the recess 1 used in performing the before-mentioned rites.
24. represents the catch on the lid of the case, which engages with a projection 25 on the body of the case, thus retaining the lid in its closed position while the case is being conveyed from place to place.
26 represents the blessed candles, which are lighted during the administration of the sacraments to the sick or dying. These candles are placed in the narrow chamber 1.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sacramental case constructed with a body 1, having a compartment 1, a partition 1 at one end forming a narrow chamber 1, a rectangular recess 1 and circular recess 1 connected therewith, circular recesses 1 and 1 an elongated recess 1' against the partition, and a bifurcated support 1 in the middle of the compartment, and a lid 2, formed with a compartment 2, havinga pocket 8 and a strap 9, a recess 14, and a door 11 hinged transversely of the lid for closing the recess and having a pocket 12 and a strap 13, substantially as described.
