UNITED STATS FEECE.
COMBINED WINDOW-SHADE AND CURTAIN BRACKET.
Application filed May 23, 1925; Serial No. 32,384.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined lVindow-Shade and Curtain Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shade and curtain brackets, and has for its principal object to provide a highly novel device which is readily and easily attachable to the facing strips of a window casing. means being provided for supporting the bracket in position on the window casing, without necessitating the use of nails, screws and the like such as is ordinarily employed for securing a bracket on thewindow.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined window shade and ourtain bracket which may be adjusted to accommodate the different width of the facing strips of window casings, additional means being provided for adjusting the supporting means for the window shade roller.
A still further object is to provide a de vice of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the follow ing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 isa front elevation of a pair of the brackets embodying the present inven-' tion.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the telescopic tubular member.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the brackets, and
Figure 4 is a similar view of the complementary bracket. 1
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally a. bracket which is formed of a single piece of metal, the same including the vertical arm 2, and the laterally extending arm 3 provided at the upper end of the vertical arm 2. A lateral extension is formed in the lower portion of the arm 2 and is indicated at 1, the same being provided with an opening 5, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully described.
The laterally extending arm 8 of the bracket 1, is provided at its outer end with the enlargement 6 after being disposed above the upper end of the vertical arm 2. The enlargement 6 is provided with the cut out portions '7 and 8 respectively, and a notch 9 is formed in the upper edge of the laterally extending arm 8 adjacent the enlargement as is clearly illustrated in F igure 8. r
A. complementary bracket 10 is of the identical construction as the bracket heretofore described with the exception that instead of a notch being formed in the laterally extencing arm of the complementary bracket 10, an opening 11 is provided.
The supporting means for the bracket comprises the outer and inner telescopic tubular members 12 and 13 respectively. The outer ends of the tubular members are closed, and theirinner ends are open. The tubular supporting means is adapted to extend horie zontally across the front face of each of the facing strips of a window casing, and are supported thereon through the medium of the plates 14 and 15 which are carried by the outer ends of the tubular members 12 and 13 respectively, these plates being pro vided with the inwardly disposed prongs or teeth 16. The teeth are adapted to engage the sides of the facing strips of the window casing.
A coil spring 17 is disposed within the telescopic outer and inner tubular members 12 and 13, one end of the spring being secured to an inwardly disposed hook 18 which is stamped from the plate 14: at the outer end of the outer tube 12, the other end of the coil spring 17 being secured-to a similar hook 19 which is stamped out from the plate 15 arranged at the outer end of the inner tube 13. The coil spring 17 will hold the tubular members in a firmly clamped position on the window casing so that the accidental displacement of the supporting means for each of the brackets will be prevented.
The outer diameter of the outer tubular member 12 is slightly less than the diameter of the opening 5 formed in the extension t provided on the lower portion of the vertical arms of each of the brackets so as to enable the brackets to be supported on the tubular ill) member 12, and to further permit the sliding movement of the bracket thereon. A set screw 20 is provided for holding each of the brackets in its properly adjust-ed position on the outer tubular member 12.
hen the parts are properly positioned on the facing strips of a window casing, a shade roller will have its respective ends disposed in the notch and opening 9 and 11 respectively, the cut out portions 7 of the brackets will support the respective ends of a curtain pole while the complementary cut out portions 8 will support a rod which may be provided for supporting portieres.
A device of the above mentioned character may be readily and easily attached or detached, and will not necessitate the use of nails, screws, or the like for securing the same on a window casing, and thereby pre venting the window casing from becoming marred. Where double-windows are to be fitted with shade and curtain brackets of the character embodied in my invention, the middle facing strip may be utilized for receiving an additional pairof telescopic tubular members such as are secured to the sides of the window casing.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the 111- vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the class described comprising a shade bracket, means for detachably supporting the same on the facing strip of a window casing comprising a pair of telescopic outer and inner tubular members, plates providing closures for the outer ends of said tubular members, inwardly disposed teeth on the inner ends of each plate adapted for clamping engagement with the sides of the window casing, a hook struck out from the intern'iediate portion of each plate and disposed within the ends of the respective tubular members, a coil spring within the tubular members and having the ends there-' of attached to the respective hooks for holding the teeth in clamped engagement with the window casing, said shade bracket being adapted for slid-able movement on the outer tubular members, and means for securing the bracket in various adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
THOMAS F. HUNT.
