Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEO. A. BEACH, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR TELEGRAPH-WIRES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 156,969, dated November 17, 1874; application filed August 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BEACH, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Wires and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in clamps, designed especially for use in the construction of telegraph-lines, and may be used for holding ropes, cables, rods, &e., in other places, with pulley-wheel substituted in place of block, as shown in plan.
In the drawing is represented a side elevation of my invention.
My invention consists in the following parts and combinations, as herein specified and claimed, wherein A is a plate of metal, or any other suitable material, fashioned substantially as shown in the drawing. 0 is a lever, riveted to the plate A upon its back, at a. Upon the front of the plate A is provided the clamp-block B, which operates upon the rivet D, which is attached firmly to the lever O, and moves in the circular slot F made in the plate A. To insure a parallel relation between the biting-surface of the block B and the shoulder A of the plate A, I provide the curved slot or groove F parallel to the slot F, in which operates the lug 12 upon the block B. The table or hearing A of the plate A may be grooved or guttered to better secure the wire resting upon it while being clamped. The plate A is continued into a handle, a, which at its extremity may be provided with a hole or ring for the purpose of suspension or carrying.
The operation of my device is obvious. Upon moving the lever 0 one way or the other the clamping-block B will be removed from or drawn toward the clamping-shoulder A of the plate A, and the arrangement of the slots F F will operate in an obvious manner to secure a parallel relation between the biting-surface of the block B and the shoulder A, and any wire or other substance placed between them will be clamped in an obvious manner by the operation of the lever O.
I claim as my invention- The portable clamp herein described, for clamping telegraph-wires, rods, &c., consisting of the plate or body A, formed with the serrated flange or bed A and slots F and F, clamping block or jaw B b, and lever O D a, all constructed, arranged, and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of August, 1874.
GEO. A. BEACH.
