IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR ROLLING BL ANKS FOR NUT-BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,928, dated November 17, 1874; application filed October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE JOHNSON, of Haverstraw, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in NutBar-Rolling Machines, of which the following is a specification: 7
My invention consists of a revolving clearer having notches in its periphery, in combination with a pair of rolls for rolling notched bars, the notches of the clearer corresponding to the notches in the rolls for forming the hexagonal nuts, to mesh with the notches in the solt hot iron as it is received and discharged by the clearer, by which it discharges the bar Without injury to the corners, to which it is subject with an ordinary stationary clearer, on which the corners are moved with such pressure as to flatten and otherwise misshape them.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved rolling machine,- taken on the line a: as of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 "is a front elevation.

The rolls A are notched in the bottom of the grooves at B, to form notched bars 0,
which cannot be discharged over a stationary clearer of the ordinary kind without injury to the points of the notches. I have therefore provided the revolving notched clearer D with notches corresponding to the notches in the bar, and geared with the rolls, so that its notches will mesh with the notches of the bar as it passes from the rolls. In addition to this, I arrange the upper roll a little in. advance of the lower one on the discharging side, so as to throw the bar down on the clearer, and thereby prevent it from going up with the upper roll, as it might otherwise do.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a notched revolving clearer, D, with notched rolls for making notched bars, the said clearer being geared with the rolls to mesh with the notches of the bar, substantially as specified.
