UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. HEWITT, OF GEORGETOWN,ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,453, dated May 7, 1878 application filed April 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. HEWITT, of-
Georgetown, in the county of Vermillion and State of Illinois, have invented a newrand valuable Improvement in Vegetable-Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a part-sectional side view of my vegetable-cutter. Fig. 2 is a bottom-plan view; and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a vegetable-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the base or bed-plate of the machine, provided at its sides with parallel guides B B, between which the box 0 is moved back and forth, said guides being formed or provided with suitable flanges a a, as shown. The box 0 is, along its sides, provided with shoulders b b, to rest upon the flanges a a, while the .flanges a a enter grooves b b in the sides of the box, thus preventing any upand-down movement of the box, but allowin g it to move freely back and forth over the bed A. V
In the bed A is a transverse slot, made wider at the bottom than at the top, and in said slot is placed the knife D, which is, on its under side, provided with a series of lugs or projections, d d. Through these lugs is passed a shaft or rod, h, provided at one end with a crank or arm, f, and having its bearings in the guides or side pieces B B. By means of the arm or crank f the knife D may be set at any angle desired to cut coarser or finer.
The box 0 is, at its ends, provided with upright standards E E, in the upper ends of which are placed the journals t of a roller, F, said roller having a central circumferential groove, with a strap, k, wrapped around the same. One end of this strap is attached to the top, and the other to the bottom, of an upright bar, G, to the lower end of which a plunger, H, is secured.
The journals z z of theroller F are formed with cranks or arms m m, extending at right angles from them, and in opposite directions, as shown.
The box G is moved back and forth by means of a pitman, I, connecting it with a crank-shaft, J, having a suitable handle at one end for rotating the same.
From the bed A rise two standards, 0 O, which are provided at the top, on their inner sides, with circular rims L L, forming teeth m m, inclined upon one side, as shown.
The vegetables to be out are placed in the box 0, and rest upon the base A, the box having no bottom, and'the plunger H placed on the vegetables. This plunger is prevented from any upward movement by means of a pawl, 19, and ratchet-wheel n, as shown.
By now rotating the crank-shaft J the box is moved back and forth, allowing the knife D to out the vegetables as they pass over it. This knife is double-edged, and, being hung in the center, as described, it will tilt according to the direction of the movement of the box, and out coarser or finer, according to the adjustment or amount of play of the crank f.
At the end of each stroke one crank, m, strikes one of the inclined teeth m of the circular rim L, and turns the roller F a certain distance, whereby the plunger H is fed down to hold the vegetables at all times down upon the bed A, the pawl 19 and ratchet-wheel n preventing any upward movement of the plunger.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A vegetable-cutter provided with up rights 0 0, having circular rims L L, with inclined teeth m, in combination with rollershaft F, having arms on m and a plunger, 0perated substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the roller F, strap k,
plunger H, with bar Gr, journal 1', with arms m, and the circular rims L, with inclined teeth m, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. HENRY ELI HEWITT. Witnesses:
A. A. TALBOTT, WM. G. LUMBARD.
